Copies of the first edition were bound in two covers. One is green cloth with black lettering, however, the preferable one is green with yellow coloring and black lettering. This is the preferred cover in very nice condition, bright with no loss to yellow paint. Rear cover one dark spot and lightly stained near spine, spine cloth lightly faded. Original endpapers clean and bright, contents also bright and unmarked except for a lower page edge stain between pp. 4 and 5 not affecting text, archival repair lower page edge p. 4. First edition of this four-time U.S. amateur championâs first book. Octavo, original green cloth gilt, photographic cover portrait to the front panel, with forty eight stop-action illustrations. In very good condition. âAlthough he was of slight stature, Travers dominated golf in the decade before World War I with his stunning iron shots and expert putting. He won many tournaments because of his calm temperament, patience, and ability to make precise shots⦠He won the United States Amateur in 1907, 1908, 1912, and 1913, and was runner-up in 1914. His victory in 1913 set a record for that tournamentâ"not broken until Bobby Jones won it five times⦠He was among the first members of the Golf Hall of Fame established by the United States Golf Associationâ (DAB).

First edition of this early work by Travers and Rice, "one of the first golf books to carry Mr. Rice's name" (Murdoch 784). Octavo, original cloth, illustrated. From the library of Albert W. Tillinghast, with his handwritten inventory card laid in. Tillinghast was a golf course architect andÂone of the most prolific architects in the history of golf; he worked on more than 265 different courses. He was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2015. A nice example with noted provenance. An early discussion of golf psychology, accompanied by stories of championship matches and champion players. Jerome D. Travers won the U.S. Amateur tile four times, and was the U.S. Open Champion, as an amateur, in 1915.

Travers was one of the leading amateur golfers of the early 1900s, winning the U.S. Amateur in 1907, 1908, 1912 and 1913. He also won the us Open in 1916, the New Jersey Amateur three times, and the Metropolitan Amateur (New York) five times. He was regarded as one of the finest match play golfers of his time and had a famous rivalry with Walter Travis. The two men are often confused due to that and the similarity of surnames. Photograph of the author on front cover surrounded by a border of alternating square mesh golf balls and Scottish thistles, all in gilt. FORMER PROPERTY OF MAX H. BEHR WITH HIS SIGNATURE ON UPPER FFEP. BEHR HAS MADE TWO CHANGES TO THE TEXT. On page 54 Travers recalls how he defeated Max Behr in the US Amateur finals at Garden City Golf Club by 8 and 7. Behr has changed the score to 7 and 6. On page 56, Behr has crossed out the name of Osward Kirby as winner of the New Jersey State Championship of 1912, and penciled in Max Behr of Morris County G. Travers won the U.S. Amateur in 1907, 1908, in 1912 and in 1913 the year this book was published. He also won the U.S. Open at Baltusrol in 1915. A member of the world golf hall of game, Travers was born into an affluent New York family and lived until 1951. Contains 48 illustrations and is combination of biography and instructional book. Books signed by Travers are among the rarest in the golfing library and one inscribed to President Harding, makes this an extra special copy. Harding was among the most avid golfers to occupy the Oval Office, playing two to three times a week. He established the Warren G. Tight and unusually crisp, with just a touch of light foxing to the endpapers. And in a bright, price-intact ($1.25), VG- to VG example of the 1st issue pictorial dustjacket. Light chipping at the spine crown and along the panel edges and tips, light foxing to the panels. Still though, handsome and very presentable --and notably uncommon in dustjacket. 12mo, 9 line-drawn illustrations complementing the text, co-written by the formidable Grantland Rice. Jerome Travers had just come off a win at the 1915 US Open at Baltusrol to add to his 4 US Amateur Golf Championships and, by any measure, was (and still is) considered one of the great golfers of the early part of the 20th century.
