This is the main question that the papers collected in this volume aim to address. The term historical sociolinguistics (HSL), a discipline that combines linguistic, social, historical, and philological sciences, suggests that a language cannot be studied without its social dimension. Similarly, the study of a language in its social dimension is nothing else than the study of the communication which takes place between members of a given speech community by the means of written texts. These are seen as sets of shared signs used by authors to communicate to their audiences. This volume is divided into two distinct parts. In the first, Cuomo's and Bentein's papers aim to offer an overview on the discipline and examples of applied HSL. Valente's, Bianconi's, and Perez-Martin's papers will then show how to study the context of production and reception of Byzantine texts. These are followed by Horrocks' study on some features of Atticized Medieval Greek. In the second part, the contributions by Telelis, Odorico, and Manolova focus on the context of reception of the texts by Georgios Pachymeres, Theodoros Pediasimos, and Nikephoros Gregoras respectively. Kaffeefleck, sonst gut und sauber. - Aus dem Text: Die wissenschaftliche Beschäftigung mit byzantinischen Personen beginnt mit dem noch heute wichtigen Werk Familiae augustae byzanti-nae von Charles Dufresne Sieur du Cange (161088), dem Ahnherrn der Byzantinistik. Darauf jedoch folgte wie auch in vielen anderen Spezialdisziplinen dieses Faches ein völliges Schwinden des Interesses. So hat fast das ganze 19. Jh. auf diesem Gebiet nichts zu bieten, wenn man von dürren Verzeichnissen und dem Wörterbuch der griechischen Eigennamen von Pape Benseler absieht, in das sich auch einige byzantinische Namen verirrt haben. Demzufolge betrachtete vor über 80 Jahren S. Lampros ein Wörterbuch der byzantinischen Eigennamen als ein besonderes Desiderat und das erste moderne Unternehmen war dann die leider unvollendet gebliebene Arbeit von H. Moritz, die freilich vornehmlich sprachliche Zwecke verfolgt. Die Planung einer eigentlichen Prosopo-graphie stammt aber erst von V. Laurent, wobei ein Teil für Familien und ein zweiter für die übrigen Personen vorgesehen war, die nur mit Vornamen überliefert sind. Kurz darauf lieferte auch S. Biedl ein Specimen4. In der neueren Zeit ist es dann offensichtlich zu einer Beschränkung auf die früh byzantinische Zeit gekommen, wobei in Frankreich die kirchliche, in England hingegen die weltliche Sphäre bearbeitet werden soll. - Wikipedia: Erich Trapp (* 5.
