Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) is an international humanitarian organization, committed to providing medical assistance to populations in danger and to raising awareness of the plight of the people they help. Today MSF is active in more than 60 countries in the world. MSF has been working in Peru since 1985. In Peru, the prevalence of HIV/AIDS is low, but highest amongst the most neglected members of society there, mainly homosexual men and commercial sex workers. Since 2004, MSF has offered HIV/AIDS care in the slum of Villa El Salvador, Lima.In Lima, MSF has been working in Lurigancho, one of the most populated prisons of Latin America. In this prison the risk of contracting HIV/AIDS is 5 to 7 times higher than the rest of the country. At the end of 2007, MSF hand over all Peruvian projects to local authorities, leaving the country after almost 25 years. Larry Towell (Magnum Photos) was commissioned by MSF to travel to the prison and the slums in Lima to photograph the result of MSF's 25-year presence and show that the area is now ready to continue its fight against HIV and AIDS on its own.Towell brings us black and white images of people shunned by society and desperate through poverty, their situation exacerbated through the endemic HIV and AIDS in their already marginalised population. MSF has targeted their cause for the past 25 years. This book is a celebration of their work and the people whose existence they have salvaged.

Añadir al carritoSoft cover. Condición: New. No Jacket. 1st Edition. In this powerful documentation 'Somoza's Last Stand', what appears very clear is, that the contra war accurately portrayed in this book is a war on the poor. To date there are over 20,000 Nicaraguans who have died and most of their stories will never be known. These testimonies are told by real people, they are not statistics, not illusory forms shown on daily television, these are the people who have survived and from their words we the reader will learn once again that compassion, tenacity and abiding faith in justice can and does overcome even the most impossible odds. Signed by Illustrator(s).

Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: New. Estado de la sobrecubierta: no dj. Larry Towell (Photographer) Ilustrador. First. Since 1966, 40,000 people have vanished into the bowels of the state security apparatus in Guatemala. Forty-six percent of all "disappearances" in Latin America occur here, where the method of eliminating persons, leaving no trace behind, was invented and refined. To live with the reality of "disappeared" loved ones is to live constantly in the permanent presence of an absence. This collection is based on the words of the relatives of the "disappeared" who, in spite of continued harassment and death threats, continue to demand explanations and justice. Larry Towell travelled to Guatemala in 1988 and 1989 to record the people's stories. He gives the voices a chance to be heard through interviews with GAM (Grupo de Apoyo Mutuo, or Mutual Support Group), an organization of family members of the "disappeared". The group was formed in June of 1984 when five persons who had repeatedly met while searching for the loved ones decided to band together in that search. Although GAM is not the only internal organization pressuring the government, it was the first to do so, and to endure. Although a venue of direct dialogue for general social reform began to open between the government and the social sector after the 1993 naming of Ramiro de Leon Carpio, the former human-rights ombudsman, as president, the issue of the "disappeared" remains unresolved, and not a single high-ranking military officer has been brought to trial. 440 grams.
