This is one of the most important examples of the design work of Rogers.

This work also initiated the idea of book designing as an art in France. In 1529 Tory published his own book, Champfleury, one of the most important and influential works of the time. It set a standard for French publishing that in many ways is still followed today. In the introduction to Champfleury, Tory is quoted as saying that there are three different kinds of men who corrupt the French language; the 'skimmers of Latin', the 'jokers', and the 'slangers.' Collated complete. Geofroy Tory published his own book, Champ Fleury, in 1529. The topics of this text range from handwriting styles to the proper use of grammar. It was one of the most important and influential works of the time, and set a standard for French publishing that in many ways is still followed today. Tory is best known for introducing the apostrophe, the acute accent and grave accent, and the cedilla to the French language. He put many French texts into print at a time when that was only done for Latin texts. With an introduction by J. W. Jolliffe. In publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, cloth is in excellent condition. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and clean. Fine. book.

Overall, this is a solid, tight, Near Very Good copy in a like dust jacket, which has losses and tears at the spine ends and corners, wear with short tears along the hinges with splitting starting to the hinge ends, wear with short creased tears to the edges, sunning to the spine, and rubbing with small smudges to the covers. The jacket is wrapped in Mylar, and additional images are available by request.

This copy bound by Don Glaister in full crimson goatskin with typographic design referencing Rogers's type design throughout the volumea stylized A on the front cover and Z on the rear tooled in blind and gold transitioning to painted lines. Glaister employs slightly raised and recessed areas beneath the leather with occasional light sanding, all to offer subtle dimensionality, a suggestive nod to the raise aspects of type. Crimson cork endpapers, gold and crimson silk headbands accent the original gold top-edge. Signed in blind on the rear pastedown with date and gold dot, "Donald Glaister 2025." Fine in clamshell. This edition, designed by Bruce Rogers is the first English translation of Tory's landmark work begun in 1523 and published 1529. Tory's influence on 16th century typography was immeasurablemoving French printing away from gothic types towards the roman faces, a movement that would define modern typography. D. B. Updike calls Tory's Champ Fleury "one of the important books in the history of letter design" (I, p. 188). A beautiful edition that took decades for Rogers to bring from a proposal to the Grolier Club to a printed edition. And of all he designed, it was among Rogers's favorite (#24 in BR Thirty). Tory's groundbreaking and forward-looking work had long been a classic text by the time Rogers designed this edition 400 years later.
