His collection of essays all address the history of, and issues relating to the US' 'Open Door Policy', formulated to preserve equal access to China's markets by all nations and to resist the attempts by some imperial powers to divide the country up into colonial spheres of influence. While Japan seems to fall within the latter category, Tomimas argues that it is for the sake of security of the motherland that Japan must exert its dominance over northern China(!) While the essays are all in English, the volume concludes with 32 pages of verse in Japanese by the author.
