Inscribed "To Mary & Deak With highest regards and best wishes as you wade your way thru this one man's saga of life. so good to know you here in Aspen. Gene". Gene Todd was born and raised on his father's cattle ranch in northern Wyoming, near the Big Horn Mountains. He attended rural country schools. In this book he vividly describes life on a Wyoming family ranch during the Great Depression and World War II - the memorable, lonely, and funny times. He graduated from the University of Denver in 1951 which he describes as a miracle greater than all the biblical miracles combined. In 1954 he graduated from the Iliff School of Theology with a Th.M. and was ordained a Baptist minister and a little rural church where he was tagged the "Country Parson" by US Senator "Big Ed" Johnson of Colorado because of his unique gift in storytelling. . He later became a student chaplain at the University of South Dakota where he acquired a graduate degree in history, became acquainted with George McGovern, and was introduced to County power politics. In 1961 he moved back to Wyoming and became an Episcopal priest where he served a parish and Green River before his calling in 1965 to the historic St. Mark's Church in Cheyenne, known as the "Pioneer Church of Wyoming." Here he came into close contact with the prominent political leaders of Wyoming. He remained at St. Mark's for twenty-seven years (1965-1992) as an influential and controversial parson during this turbulent era of "social change" in our nation's history. While dancing on troubled waters, he was sustained by an abiding sense of humor, with most of it directed at himself. Although he fears to have lost his reverancy in his struggle to survive the challenge and turmoil of a very active and long pastorate, described in this book with poignancy and hilarity, Gene hopes it can be said that he kept the faith and retained his relevancy to life. The teams dealt with IT!! There is no way that you could have a team stand up the way we did. We knew we had IT. It was all built in as we had been working on IT! for years."- Arnold Aldrich (Apollo 13)Tough and Competent documents the leadership and teamwork principles which emerged from an organization of novice, part-time engineers in NASA Mercury Control. By July 1969, when faced with the stress of the Apollo 11 mission to land Americans on the moon, they had matured into a group of hardened individuals empowered to make the split-second decisions to land with only seventeen seconds of fuel remaining. What had changed? Team chemistry, IT!, is the unifying soul of operations that emerged from the leadership, working, and social environment to achieve organizational excellence. Mission Control could address quickly the risks and complexity of spaceflight operations. The intangible element, IT!, elevates performance to where the impossible becomes commonplace.IT! was born in a bare-bones warehouse floor work environment, where learning by doing developed the materials for flight. Controllers spanned diverse backgrounds: Philco tech reps, farm boys, Native Americans, and junior college grads who became self-made engineers. A free exchange of knowledge developed expertise among colleagues. Everyone brought unique viewpoints and skills which coalesced into IT!In relaying his long tenure at NASA, Kranz narrates the development of IT! and how it began with a watershed moment. When he addressed a stunned team after the tragic loss of Apollo 1, Kranz delivered his "Kranz Dictum" that "Tough" and "Competent" were the new tenants of Mission Control. "Tough means we are forever accountable for what we do or what we fail to do. We will never again compromise our responsibilities. . . . Competent means we will never take anything for granted." Moving innovation forward was never simple. From Gemini to Apollo launches, the Skylab program, and the stunning loss of the Challenger crew, Kranz was the face of NASA leadership. His views on lessons learned through decades of Mission Control are valuable for any innovation-based organization. This item is printed on demand.
