Condición: Fine. 448, 16 col photos, 229 figs, 74 tables. . HB. Fine in d/w. Albatrosses are long-lived, oceanic seabirds which have long held a special affection amongst those who travel the oceans. They are famed for their long-distance migrations and supreme adaptation to the marine environment, with some species spending the…ir entire lives at sea and only returning to land to breed. This is the first comparative account of the albatrosses based on a comprehensive review of their natural history, oceanography. Island geography and recent scientific research. This book thoroughly explores all aspects of albatross biology, distribution and behaviour, as well as such topics as identification and taxonomy. Traditionally, the family has comprised 13 species in two genera, but more recently it has been proposed that 24 species in four genera should be recognised; most species inhabit the southern oceans. The author looks at each taxon, arranging them in various groups for convenience. The authoritative text is accompanied by numerous photographs, diagrams and maps. [9781873403945].

Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. Immediate dispatch from Somerset. Nice book in great condition. Pages in excellent condition. Removable protective cover fitted. Hardcover. English. See images for condition. About the book >.>.> Albatrosses are long-lived seabirds which have long impressed those who travel the oceans, although t…his admiration has not prevented them from being killed in large numbers. They are famed for their supreme adap-tations to the marine environment, breeding on remote islands and spending most of their lives at sea flying immense distances. This is the first comparative account of the albatross family. It is based on personal experience and a comprehensive review of the literature. The book explores albatross natural history from a geographic point of view, arranging the birds in four groups for convenience. Albatross taxonomy is currently subject to some debate; traditionally, the family has comprised 13 species in two genera, but recently it has been proposed that 24 species in four genera should be recognised. Most species inhabit the Southern Ocean. The author describes the various forms within each group, their distribution and breeding biology, as well as com-parative treat.

Añadir al carritoFine in publishers cloth in like dustjacket. 448pp. Illustrated. After graduating in zoology and botany from Bangor University, Lance Tickell joined the British Antarctic Survey and spent two and a half years in the South Orkney Islands. A study of the Dove Prion formed the basis of an M.Sc. dissertation at the Edward Grey Insti…tute in Oxford under David Lack, and research on albatrosses in South Georgia over the next six years gained him a Ph.D. His subsequent career included working for the Nature Conservancy in Shetland and Orkney, as a lecturer in various African universities, and as a producer of natural history television in Bristol. Whilst working for the BBC, he directed a documentary about albatrosses, Marathon Birds, and was one of the producers of the acclaimed series Life in the Freezer. Throughout his career, he has retained a passion for albatrosses and has undertaken research on every species at various times. He began writing this book in 1984 while lecturing at the University of Bradford. Albatrosses are long-lived, oceanic seabirds which have long held a special affection amongst those who travel the oceans. They are famed for their long-distance migrations and supreme adaptation to the marine environment, with some species spending their entire lives at sea and only returning to land to breed.
