Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. 1st Edition. The Batsford Book of Romantic Poetry Edited by Samuel Carr London: B.T. Batsford Ltd., 1982. First edition. Hardcover, original brick-red cloth with gilt lettering to the spine. Dust jacket present. 124 pages (including preliminaries and indexes), with 4 colour plates and numerous black-and-white illustrations throughout. Illustrated endpapers. 8vo (approximately 23 × 14 cm / 9 × 5½ inches). ISBN 0 7134 3903 3 / 9780713439038. Includes indexes of poets and artists. This handsomely produced Batsford anthology brings together poems of the Romantic period with the paintings and drawings that so often shared the same subjects and sensibility. The double aim, set out in the introduction, is both to give pleasure through the juxtaposition of memorable (and sometimes unfamiliar) verse and pictures, and to show how closely the poets and painters of the age responded to the same themes: night and nightmare, storm-lashed coasts, ruined abbeys, moonlight, the Lakes, the Alps, and the Italian landscape. Wordsworth's Tintern Abbey appears alongside views by Turner, Girtin and Crome; Shelley's The Cloud is paired with Constable; Byron and de Loutherbourg share stormy coastal scenes; Erasmus Darwin and Henry Fuseli are both preoccupied by the night-mare; and the Lakes, Alps and Italy recur throughout. The colour plates include works after William Blake (Thus wept the Angel voice… from America), Francis Towne (The Source of the Arveiron), John Constable (Stonehenge), and J.M.W. Turner (The Devil's Bridge, St Gothard — a detail of which also forms the striking jacket illustration, supplied by Thomas Agnew & Sons). Black-and-white reproductions throughout feature further works by Joseph Wright of Derby, James Ward, Henry Fuseli, John Crome, John Constable, George Barret Jnr, Thomas Girtin, J.C. Buckler, Edward Burney, John Martin, Samuel Palmer, and others. Front and back endpapers reproduce watercolours and paintings by J.S. Cotman and P.J. de Loutherbourg respectively. About the editor Samuel Carr (1913-) was a successful and prolific British editor of illustrated poetry anthologies, almost all published by Batsford. His other titles include The Poetry of Cats (1974), Birds, Beasts and Fishes, The Poetry of Childhood, The Poetry of Birds, The Poetry of Horses, The Poetry of Railways, Hymns as Poetry (with a preface by John Betjeman), The Batsford Book of Country Verse, and later volumes such as Ode to the Countryside and Ode to Flowers. He specialised in carefully chosen thematic collections that paired verse with fine reproductions of related art, producing attractive, accessible books that remain popular with collectors of both poetry and illustrated volumes. Condition (based on the copy shown) Book: Very Good. Clean, bright cloth boards with only light shelf-wear; tight binding; pages clean and unmarked, with the illustrations crisp. No significant foxing or inscriptions noted. Dust jacket: Very Good. The Turner jacket design is intact and attractive, with only minor edge-wear and light shelf-rubbing; protected or unclipped as applicable. The volume presents very well and is a strong, attractive copy of this first edition. A pleasing example of Batsford's characteristic illustrated poetry anthologies, offering both literary and visual enjoyment of the Romantic period. George Barret Jnr., J. Barnett, William Blake, J.C. Buckler, Edward Burney, John Constable, J.S. Cotman, David Cox, J.R. Cozens, John Crome, Francis Danby, Thomas Doughty, Henry Fuseli, Thomas Girtin, W.H. Hunt, P.J. de Loutherbourg, John Martin, S.Palmer (ilustrador).…

Hardcover. Condición: As New. 1st Edition. As new condition red linen boards with an approximately 3 1/2 inch by 2 1/2 inch rectangular color illustrated front cover paste-down illustration with gold front cover and spine lettering, contained in an as new condition color illustrated slipcase. Includes Foreword; Author Index; Date Index and About Guideposts. Also includes a bound-into-the-volume forest green satin ribbon page marker. "Christmas is all about a story, the story of a baby born to humble parents in a tiny Bethlehem stable under a brilliant eastern star -- a story that changed the world forever. So it comes as no surprise that some of Guideposts magazine's greatest stories about about Christmas, and how people are inspired and lives are changed at this blessed time of year. For there is a resonance from that birth that echoes through time and through our very hearts. Every story in this collection is proof of the enduring power of that first Christmas, true personal accounts of transformation told by ordinary people . and not -so-ordinary people. You will read about blessings, traditions, forgiveness, love, faith, giving, miracles, and angles. All the themes that make this season truly holy. Have you ever felt lonely at Christmas? Widower Jimmy Gupton did, until he took in a struggling young married couple with a baby on the way. Jimmy learned that there is always room at the inn, and always a reason to go on living. A copywriter who yearns to give gifts that really mean something has her prayer answered in a way she could have never imagined. A single mom struggling to raise two young daughters discovers the power of a puppy to soothe hurting hearts. A firefighter's vivid and disturbing dream saves a family from death on Christmas Eve. Then there is the account of a mysterious disappearance of the Christ Child from the manger scened at Victory Church. Who could have done such a thing? You'll be surprised to find out. I was. Almost as surprised as I was to learn how writer Kitty Slattery's missing tooth led her to a deeper understanding of the Christmas spirit. There are familiar names too. Hollywood legend Jimmy Stewart will tell you why it really is "a wonderful life" and what that classic holiday movie meant to him on the most personal level. Celebrated ornament-maker Christopher Radko introduces you to his Polish grandmother and explains how the desire not to disappoint her led him to design his first beautiful creations. Beloved actor Michael Landon talks about the angels in his life, human and otherwise. My favorite holiday stories, though, come from our "His Mysterious Ways" feature -- year in and year out the most popular page in the magazine. Here you will meet people from all walks of life who have experienced something inexplicable, even miraculous, at Christmastime -- incredible stories that will send a shiver down your spine and warm your heart as well. This book is filled with stories you will never forget from the little magazine that has inspired millions of readers for sixty years. So go ahead, start reading, and find out why Guideposts is America's favorite magazine, especially at Christmas. -- Edward Grinnan, editor-in-chief, Guideposts." -- from the Foreword. Calvin, Marisa (designer); (ilustrador). …

Hardcover. Condición: Fine. 1st Edition. Fine unread condition faux navy blue leather boards with a color illustrated front cover paste-down, with gold front cover and spine lettering. Includes Preliminary Page Note by The Editors; Acknowledgments; and About the Authors. The volume also features gilt page edges on all three sides, a traditional 3-hubbed spine, and acid-free paper for permanence and durability. Illustrated with a double-page color frontispiece painting and color illustrated front and rear endpapers. "Great American Mystery Stories of the Twentieth Century presents an impressive array of writers. These literary sleuths - American writers who hail from all over the United States and even abroad - offer stories that reflect the varied experiences of a vast and culturally diverse country. The authors in this collection have garnered innumerable honors, from myriad awards conferred by their own mystery-writing colleagues to the Nobel Prize in Literature; they all share the writer's greatest reward, however, the broad readership and popular acclaim that can only come from creating superb, entertaining tales. Some of these mystery masters have left an indelible mark on the reading public by creating characters that have entered the national consciousness. The Saint, Lew Archer, Travis McGee, Uncle Abner - these names are real to mystery aficionados who know them well and have learned much about life from them. Other writers have given birth to characters who live only in one brief tale, making readers regret that they won't meet them again. Although the modern American mystery story has only recently gained respectability as the subject of academic study, the genre is an integral part of this country's literature. In fact, it stands at the very center of a markedly American literary offering, the short story. Edgar Allan Poe, the creator of the short story form, based the world's first mystery tale on the crime story, a style of fiction that originally appeared in the beginning of the nineteenth century. He enhanced the elements in these negligible stories with such genius that he lifted his own tales to the level of art. Poe's "The Murder in the Rue Morgue," first published in 1841, has been called by one critic "the single most important story in the history of the genre." Subsequent literary detectives may have occasionally felt daunted by following the mystery story's inimitable forefather; still, they have made their own distinctive contributions to this uniquely American literary form. Among them, the twenty-three writers in this anthology of American mystery masterpieces have written hundreds of memorable stories. Choosing the writers - not to mention the stories - from a national treasure of literary excellence was indeed difficult. The sheer number of outstanding American mystery stories offers endless hours of reading pleasure. To this day, superlative writers apply their varied skills to the genre first explored by Edgar Allan Poe. Readers new to this literary terrain will enjoy finding their way to some of mystery's hidden corners - as well as its landmarks. - The Editors" - from the Preliminary Page. Ward, John (panel art and color frontispiece) (ilustrador).…
