Abele; Index -- "Interest in the functional morphology of crustaceans is currently at an all-time high . During the past twenty-five years many crustacean biologists have directed their research toward the study of 'how crustaceans work', and from these investigations we are gaining a new understanding of arthropod functional morphology and embryology. Gaps in our knowledge are being filled, and we are moving rapidly toward a sophisticated understanding of external and internal crustacean morphology. Recent technological advances in scanning and transmission electron microscopy, together with new preparative methods, now allow very close examination of crustacean anatomy. These advances have been accompanied by a change in emphasis in morphological studies. It is no longer sufficient merely to provide a description of the anatomy of a feature. Now one must demonstrate the functions of morphological features or, at the least, provide sufficient information on which to base an inference. The study of morphology is changing from an observational vocation into an experimental, hypothesis-testing science - a radical change for a branch of biology that has had a long and all too venerable history as a purely descriptive one. The papers presented here amply demonstrate this process. First two chapters present schemes for classifying crustacean setae. Setae are ubiquitous structures in crustaceans, and the lack of a comprehensive classification system for them has been a significant problem. Both of these studies contribute significantly to our understanding of what constitutes a particular setal type, and they will be welcomed by systematists and functional morphologists alike. Ch.3 summarizes from a functional viewpoint our current understanding of the physiological responsiveness of sensory neurons in certain crustacean setae, and explores the ultrastructural features of different types of physiologically defined sensory neurons. Grooming of the exoskeleton is an important crustacean behavior. Ch.4 presents evidence that grooming characters can contribute to our understanding of decapod phylogeny.".

Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Over the weekend of 21-23 February 1997, a small group gathered in Tallahassee, Florida, at the invitation of Ted Williams, to discuss 'photo stasis and related topics.' The majority of participants were former students and colleagues of Ted's, but an occasional outsider such as myself was generously included. The papers presented there are collected in this volume. The theory of photo stasis was first outlined in a landmark paper by John Penn and Ted, published in 1986 in Experimental Eye Research. They provided compelling data showing that, in the albino rat eye, levels of rhodopsin, outer-segment length, rhodopsin regeneration rate, and even, perhaps, rhodopsin packing density all depend on the levels of cyclic illumination (12 hours light, 12 hours dark) in which the animal was reared. So, for example, there is fourfold less rhodopsin in a retinal extract derived from an animal reared at 400 lux than in an extract from the retina of an animal reared at 3 lux. Animals reared at intermediate levels of light show intermediate amounts of rhodopsin that are correlated with illumination level. What these data immediately suggested is that the photoreceptor cell can adjust its photon-catching ability in response to the levels of light in which an animal is reared, and they also provided a compelling rationale for outer-segment turnover, a phenomenon discovered 20 years earlier by Richard Young but whose function has remained obscure.
