Studium an der Kunstakademie Berlin bei Eduard Daege, Eduard Holbein und Julius Schrader. 1866 Wechsel an die Kunstakademie Karlsruhe zu Ludwig Descoudres und Hans Canon. Nach dem Tod der Mutter 1870 Rückkehr nach Berlin. Zusammenarbeit mit Adrian Ludwig Richter in Loschwitz bei Dresden. 1871 Verleihung des Michael-Beer-Stipendium für Historienmalerei; längerer Studienaufenthalt in Italien. Ab 1873 als freischaffender Künstler in München. 1876 Bekanntschaft mit dem Maler Friedrich Geselschap und Umsiedlung nach Frankfurt. Über Hans Thoma Zugang zur Kronberger Malerkolonie. Im Mittelpunkt seines Werk stehen die monumentale Historienmalerei sowie die Ausstattung von Kirchen, Villen und Geschäftshäusern; daneben entstanden aber auch Porträt- und Landschaftsbilder sowie Grafik und Plastik.
