Hardcover. Condición: Good. 1st Edition. The Japan Times Weekly. Tokyo. 1938. Volume 1 with issues 1-17 bound; with extensive alphabetical index on all printed topics/articles. These are the original weeklies with glossy color covers on each issue. Pages of each magazine have age toned; but are not dry or brittle. Volume 1 issue…s 1-17 begin with September 1, 1938 through the last issue dated December 22, 1938. Bound in heavy blue boards with strong sewn binding. Book measures approximately 12x9; and 4 pounds. while binding is strong and sound keeping all issues tightly in place; exterior hinges show some cracking. Internal hinges are still tight and sound; just seems exterior paper on hinge has a few cracks; but again, binding is strong, sound and tight; with no loose pages or issues. Endpapers show light soiling. FFEP shows a fold that has since been unfolded. Previous owner's name & phone number on front pastedown; (military Seargent) Laid in is a small handwritten note that says 'Read Vol 1 No 2 Sept 8/38 - He Knows Japan/ They invaded 3 years later.' The article is about Brigadier General Charles Burnett; and his close ties to Japanese Government officials. These weeklies are profusely illustrated with many, many pictures and blurbs; along columns and news stories. All text in English. An interesting snapshot of Japan and its relationship with the world leading up to WWII. The Empire of Japan entered World War II in September 27, 1940, by signing the Tripartite Pact with Germany and Italy, and the Japanese invasion of French Indochina. It wasn't until the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, that the US entered the war; declaring war on Japan. A very interesting collection of news weeklies in English by Japan's largest and oldest newspaper; just prior to WWII. International shipping may require additional postage.

Good. Exhibits wear and some toning along original fold lines. Small areas of loss at fold intersections. Closed tear extending six inches horizontally through the top left corner effecting map border. Area of infill in top left corner. Blank on verso. Size 25.25 x 36.25 Inches. This is an 1862 map of the Southern United States…during the American Civil War published as a supplement to the Cincinnati Dollar Weekly Times . Depicting the region from Texas and Kansas east to cover the Atlantic seaboard from Maryland south to Florida, Thus putting entire Confederacy into focus. Railroads, as arteries of transport and supply, are illustrated in detail. Major roads are illustrated as well. An inset situated in the lower right details the vicinity of Washington, D.C. The Borders With the exception of the blockading ships situated along the coast from Delaware Bay to Galveston Bay, very little highlights the bloody struggle taking place. The border nonetheless reinforces the pro-Union position of the Dollar Weekly Times . Portraits of Abraham Lincoln, Secretary of State William H. Seward, and Union Generals Winfield Scott and George McClellan occupy the corners. The vertical sections include illustrations of a star-spangled shield, a banner adorned with the Seal of the United States, and classical weapons. A further, text heavy border surrounds the central image. Advertisements for the Dollar Weekly Times , its new military chart essential for following war news, and the Cincinnati Tri-Weekly Times occupy the left and right borders. Statistics concerning a wide range of subjects, including the popular vote in the election of 1860, the strength of the Union Navy, square miles of railroad in the United States divided by state, population by state, the number of fugitive slaves from each state, and the ages of Union generals. Publication History and Census This map was published in 1862 by the Cincinnati Dollar Weekly Times . One example of this map is cataloged in OCLC and is part of the collection at the Osher Map Library. This map was published in several different editions, each of which varies slightly in appearance. It was published by Harper's Weekly in 1861 and again in 1863. The New York Sun published an edition in 1861. Bacon and Company published an edition as Bacon's Shilling Series of War Maps - Map No. 3 in 1863 and replaced Seward's portrait with a portrait of 'Stonewall' Jackson.
