Blending criticism, memoir, and reviews, it challenges readers to see how ideas affect their daily lives. Early issues have explored topics such as living honorably on Facebook, insights from Thorstein Veblen on Goldman Sachs, dating advice from Stendhal, and why conservatives should engage with Marx. Each issue features a symposium with shorter pieces on a theme chosen by the editors, covering subjects like film, conservatism, and contemporary music. Issue 7 critically examines Christopher Lasch's relevance for today's social critics, the state of photojournalism in the Photoshop era, and a memoir reflecting on the ethics of writing about the deceased. It also critiques the narcissism of David Shields and his followers, alongside the conclusion of Jonny Thakkar's "Socialism We Can Believe In," which reflects on Margaret Thatcher's death. The symposium addresses the question, "What is Marriage For?" with contributions on both sides of the gay marriage debate, marriage as a microcosm of utopian politics, and its role in navigating aging and death. Additionally, it reviews the Coca Cola museum, the HBO series Enlightened, and the phenomenon of political outrage on the Left. The Letter from the Editors focuses on Security.

Añadir al carritonear fine dust-jacket, fresh attractive copy, appears unused, black cloth. THAKKAR, JONNY. Plato as critical theorist. Cambridge, Massachusetts: Harvard University Press, 2018, stated First Printing, xii, 373pp., . Is there any point in thinking about the best possible society? Over the last decade or so, a number of political philosophers have argued that such "ideal theory" is a dangerous distraction from the concrete power struggles that make up "real politics." Jonny Thakkar takes a different view, arguing that each and every one of us has a duty to engage in ideal theory. To make that case he turns to Plato's Republic, which depicts an ideal society within which ideal theory itself plays a vital role, thanks to the institution of philosopher-kings. The first half of the book offers a careful but creative reading of the notion of rule by philosophers. The second half of the book argues that in today's liberal democracies what we need is not philosopher-kings but philosopher-citizens--citizens who reflect, both individually and together, on how they could work together to produce an environment conducive to flourishing. Plato as Critical Theorist argues that the notion of philosopher-citizens is not only compatible with Rawlsian political liberalism, but an advance on it. - CONTENTS: ntroduction -- What is philosophy for? -- Why philosophers should rule -- The beautiful city -- Plato and Athens -- Historical possibility -- Philosopher-citizens -- Moneymaking and malfunction -- Conclusion. Añadir al carritoHardback. Condición: New. What is the best possible society? How would its rulers govern and its citizens behave? Such questions are sometimes dismissed as distractions from genuine political problems, but in an era when political idealism seems a relic of the past, says Jonny Thakkar, they are more urgent than ever. A daring experiment in using ancient philosophy to breathe life into our political present, Plato as Critical Theorist takes seriously one of Plato's central claims: that philosophers should rule. What many accounts miss is the intimate connection between Plato's politics and his metaphysics, Thakkar argues. Philosophy is the activity of articulating how parts and wholes best fit together, while ruling is the activity that shapes the parts of society into a coherent whole conducive to the good life. Plato's ideal society is thus one in which ideal theory itself plays a leading role.Today's liberal democracies require not philosopher-kings legislating from above but philosopher-citizens willing to work toward a vision of the best society in their daily lives. Against the claim that such idealism is inherently illiberal, Thakkar shows that it is fully compatible with the liberal theories of both Popper and Rawls while nevertheless pushing beyond them in providing a new vantage point for the Marxian critique of capitalism.
