Frakturschrift. - Aus dem Text: Wenn geschichtliche Ereignisse und Persönlichkeiten, welche seit Jahrhunderten in der Ueberliefrung ihr festes Gepräge empfangen haben, durch eine sorgfältigere Prüfung der Quellen plötzlich eine ganz andere Gestal…t gewinnen, und nun in dieser fremdartigen Gestalt im unerbittlichen Licht der Geschichte vor die Augen treten, so hat dies etwas beunruhigendes und kann arglose Gemüter leicht gegen alle geschichtliche Forschung mißtrauisch machen. So mancher Große erscheint bei näherem Zusehen in der scharfen Beleuchtung der Urkunden klein, und mancher Unbekannte gewinnt ungeahnte Größe. Das ist oft schmerzlich, aber es muß getragen werden, denn an geschichtlicher Wahrheit ist es dem Protestanten vor Allem gelegen. Anders ist es, wenn sich die Tendenz der Geschichtschreibung bemächtigt, wenn das Resultat vor der Untersuchung feststeht und die Quellenforschung dazu dienen muß, unter allen Umständen zu dem schon fertigen Ergebnis zu führen. In dieser Hinsicht hat die ultramontane Presse unglaubliches geleistet und durch ihre sogenannte Geschichtsforschung mit ihren bekannten Kunststücken das traurige geflügelte Wort gerechtfertigt: sie lügt wie gedruckt! Es ist ja nicht schwer, die Quellen, die man benutzt, gefügig zu machen, daß sie die Melodie singen, welche man durchaus hören will, und durch geschicktes Gruppieren, Verschweigen und Deuten, durch eine künstliche Beleuchtung das in Schatten zu stellen, was man nicht brauchen kann, dagegen das scharf zu pointieren, was der Tendenz günstig ist.
