Soft cover. Condición: Good. This book is about the sad failure of international diplomacy during the years leading up to the Second World War. "Vingt Ans de Suspense Diplomatique" by Geneviève Tabouis, was published in paperback format in 1958 by Éditions Albin Michel. There is a Preface by Paul - Boncour. Geneviève Tabouis was an outspoken journalist who closely followed the international political scene in the decades between the end of the First World War and the beginning of the Second World War. She was early on, aware of the evils that lay behind the mechanizations of Hitler and Mussolini. She warned over and over again about how dangerous Hitler and the Fascists were. She was derided - Hitler himself called her ridiculous. Others warned her that she would be called a Cassandra - forgetting that that unlucky (mythical) woman's warnings came tragically true. When Hitler's intentions were clear, and states were falling under his onslaughts . and France was only too close to being swept away by the blitzkrieg, Geneviève Tabouis was warned that a warrant for her arrest would be issued and imprisonment - it was to be a sure death sentence - She escaped France, and eventually went to the United States. This book is her record of those years leading up to WWII, and a sad Record it is - sad, but fascinating. The figures that were to her daily, familiar, and often frustrating actors performing on an un-level field - are to us the historical figures who tragically - or heroically - or with evil intent - played their part. The text is entirely in French. There is a stiff index card with a note written in ink (by .? "Charbouin"). I have shown both sides, but leave it to the viewer to translate the hand-written note, which we have left in the book. TITLE : Vingt Ans de "Suspense" Diplomatique (On cover : "20 ANS de suspense diplomatique") AUTHOR : Geneviève Tabouis (1892 - 1985) PREFACE : Paul-Boncour IMPRINT : Éditions Albin Michel PLACE : Paris DATE : (1958) EDITION : Unstated. [ On Rear Cover : 13° mille - 13,000 copies - thus a second or third printing] LANGUAGE : French STATUS : OP PROVENANCE : From the personal library of internationally acclaimed literary scholar Arthur Knodel, renowned literary historian and expert on French poet Saint-John Perce. Knodel did not sign the book, but there is a note to him written on an index card, which still remains with the book. Knodel also marked some marginalia and made a few underlinings, which have also been left intact. PHYSICAL DETAILS : Trade paperback with attached-at-the-spine dust-jacket; Contains a Preface; 5 1/4" x & 7/8" x 1 1/8"; photo-pictorial dust-jacket over plain stiff card stock cover- jacket attached at spine. Text-block is sewn and glued. Top text-block edge trimmed smooth. fore- and bottom- edges trimmed rough cut. On the front are small vignette photographs of some of the main pre-war players . A photograph of Tabouis with accompanying brief biographic details is on the front flap. The rear flap and the rear cover have printed a brief synopsis of the book. CONDITION -- VERY GOOD -- This is a previously owned book that remains clean and presentable, with the following noted: EXTERIOR - Spine has a reading crease. There is a small original price sticker on the spine which was rather sloppily applied (likely for price increase between printings); edges and spine extremities display minute nicking; cover surface is mildly rubbed (most noticeably on rear) - else clean --displays nicely - great period jacket design. BINDING - Solid INTERIOR - The aforementioned marginalia and underlining, else clean and presentable.
