Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book reveals the insights of Science Revived, a poem published in the 18th century. The author sought to inform and excite readers about the importance of science, progress, and the profound enlightenment that was beginning to take hold of society. The author communicated through verse about a vast array of 18th-century scientific marvels, their potential impact on civilization, and the crucial role they would play in the future. They were optimistic that science would improve people's lives through its practical applications and help them understand the natural world better. This book provides intriguing glimpses into the scientific understandings of that era, including the belief in "Sylphs," ethereal beings that embody the essence of all things. What emerges is a rich tapestry of scientific, philosophical, and poetic ideas that shaped the intellectual landscape of the 18th century. Ultimately, this book is a testament to the enduring power of human reason and the relentless pursuit of knowledge, offering valuable insights into the history of science and the enduring quest for progress and enlightenment. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

An engraving of the Goddess of Science, reading to cherubs serves as a frontis to the section of "Notes" and references to each book (pp 206-248). The notes span time and imagination. Joseph Sympson (1715-1807) UK minister ? Vicar of Wythburn ? and author, a friend of William Wordsworth (1770-1850), whose son, Joseph Sympson was also a poet. The work is liberally sprinkled with the fairy dust of the Romantic infusion of Nature, Imagination, and Science. A copy of both editions of the work was in Wordsworth's library and is cited by him. The Sympson family is described as intimates in Dorothy's journal; and during the period of "The Excursion", fellow explorers. The Science Fiction Encyclopedia cites the work as follows "The elder Sympson's book-length poem, Science Revived; Or, the Vision of Alfred: A Poem in Eight Books (1802), though essentially a fantasy of history, has some Proto SF interest when the spirit of Alfred the Great is transported to another Star by the Goddess of Science, from which vantage he is allowed to see the future." First and only edition of a wide-ranging poem in which Alfred the Great is visited by a goddess who shows him the glorious future of England in centuries to come, but whose overall message is that neither strict Protestantism (the reformers were hostile to the arts) nor slavish adherence to Rome (the arbitrary rule of continental Kings is inimical to invention) will result in liberty and progress. Along the way, the poem takes in the invention of printing, Columbus's arrival at the Bahamas, Da Gama's voyage to the East Indies, Michelangelo, poetry (including Spenser, Shakespeare, Jonson, and Milton), music (Handel et al.) and philosophy (Newton, Locke, Addison, Johnson, etc.) Jackson, Annals of English Verse, p. 266.
