This elegant hand-colored map of the Duchy of Brabant centered on Leuven and Tienen. Around the title cartouche nine shields for the town coat of arms, that of Tienen left blank. Standing next to the cartouche is the Greek god Apollo, playing the harp and the sun shining brightly behind him. The coat of arms of the Duchy of Brabant crown the top of the map. The left side cartouche containing the scale of miles balances out the map, with a curious interaction between a male and female figure. The woman holding cartographic tools and an atlas could perhaps be Elizabeth Verseyl, the late Nicolaes Visscher's wife. The earliest mention of Leuven ("Loven") is from 891, when a Viking army was defeated by the Frankish king Arnulf of Carinthia (see: Battle of Leuven). According to a legend the city's red and white arms depict the blood-stained shores of the river Dyle after this battle. Situated beside this river, and near to the stronghold of the Dukes of Brabant, Leuven became the most important centre of trade in the duchy between the 11th and 14th centuries. A token of its former importance as a centre of cloth manufacture is shown in that ordinary linen cloth is known in late-14th-century and 15th-century texts as lewyn (other spellings: Leuwyn, Levyne, Lewan(e), Lovanium, Louvain). In the 15th century a new golden era began with the founding of what is now the largest and oldest university in the Low Countries, the Catholic University of Leuven, in 1425. The Atlas Minor is a fine and comprehensive composite atlas, and one of a series of large atlases compiled and sold by the Visscher family of art dealers and cartographers in the 17th century. Founded by Nicholas Visscher, this work is known for the high quality of engraving, exceptionally fine ornament, and accurate geographical information. No two of the Visscher atlases seem to have been identical in content, and most contain, like this one, a selection of maps by the Visschers themselves as well as other cartographers. In this case the majority of the maps are published by Visscher. In addition to the striking world map by Allard with its black background and numerous projections, and found in the "Atlas Major" from about 1705, there are maps of the continents, regional maps of Europe, ten maps of Asia, and seven maps related to America. Añadir al carritoSingle sheet (22 ¼ x 19 ½) Full margins showing the plate mark. (Light foxing, repair on verso). This handsome map depicts the fourth part of the Brabant representations. Focused on Eindhoven, the map also includes areas of Bois-Le-Duc ('s-Hertogenbosch), Helmond, Ravenstein, Megen, and Graven. An elegant title cartouche hangs in the right, embellished with fine busts. The left and right sides of the maps are bordered with the shields of the cities represented. Each column is crowned by the coat of arms of the Duchy of Brabant, as well as the shield of Bois-Le-Duc, which was the regional capital city. This map is based on the cartographic descriptions of Willebordus van der Burght. The city's official name is a contraction of the Dutch des Hertogen bosch"the Duke's forest". The duke in question was Duke Henry I of Brabant, whose family had owned a large estate at nearby Orthen for at least four centuries. He founded a new town located on some forested dunes in the middle of a marsh. At age 26, he granted 's-Hertogenbosch city rights and the corresponding trade privileges in 1185. This is, however, the traditional date given by later chroniclers; the first mention in contemporaneous sources is 1196. The original charter has been lost. His reason for founding the city was to protect his own interests against encroachment from Gelre and Holland; from its first days, he conceived of the city as a fortress. It was destroyed in 1203 in a joint expedition of Gelre and Holland, but was soon rebuilt. Until 1520, the city flourished, becoming the second largest population centre in the territory of the present Netherlands, after Utrecht. The wars of the Reformation changed the course of the city's history. Añadir al carritoSingle sheet (22 ¼ x 19 ½) Full margins showing the plate mark. (light foxing & browning along margin, light offsetting). An excellent and beautifully hand-colored map of Lüneburg; taken from Vissher's compiled Atlas Minor siue Geographia Compendiosa, Qua Orbis Terrarum, per paucas attamen novissimas tabulas ostenditu. It was originally authored by J. Van Den Aveele; with this map published by Janssonius, Pitt, and Swart. The title cartouche bears several figures setting a scene. The top features the Danish King Christian I, who intervened and helped resolved the Lüneburg Prelates' War, a bitter dispute which took place on 1446-62 between the town council and the owners of the town's salt works. The bottom depicts a scene of three figures digging for salt. A facing cartouche contains the scale of miles. The excellent hand-coloring highlights and outlines the borders of the territories. Though out its history, the town of Lüneburg lived through both great success and total demise. Most well-known as a supplier for salt dating back to the 11th century; the town quickly became a member of the Hanseatic League (initially a union of merchants; later a federation of trading towns). According to tradition, the salt was first discovered by a hunter who observed a wild boar bathing in a pool of water, shot and killed it, and hung the coat up to dry. When it was dry, he discovered white crystals in the bristles - salt. Later he returned to the site of the kill and located the salt pool. It was here that the Lüneburg Saltworks was subsequently established for many centuries. The town became the head importer of salt in Europe; trading mostly with the Swedish and their herring. The town quickly became one of the wealthiest towns in Germany; however, between the demise of the Hanseatic Leagure and lack of herring in the mid-16th century, the town rapidly declined and suffered greatly. The Atlas Minor is a fine and comprehensive composite atlas, and one of a series of large atlases compiled and sold by the Visscher family of art dealers and cartographers in the 17th century. A handsome hand-colored map of the region focused on Brussels, drawn by Michael Floris van Langren, the mathematician and astronomer to the King of Spain. The map is oriented with north to the right and includes the cities of Mechelen, Leuven and Ninove, as well as the surrounding forests, villages, roads and canals. The map is nicely decorated with an elegant title cartouche, further embellished with cherubs hold the coat of arms of Brussels (top), Nivelle, and Vilvorden. The Scale of Miles is contained in an additional cartouche with two other cherubim holding cartographic equipment. The official founding of Brussels is usually situated around 979, when Duke Charles of Lower Lotharingia transferred the relics of Saint Gudula from Moorsel to the Saint Gaugericus chapel. Charles would shortly after construct the first permanent fortification in the city, doing so on that same island. Because of its location on the shores of the Senne on an important trade route between Bruges and Ghent, and Cologne, Brussels grew quite quickly; it became a commercial centre that rapidly extended. In the 13th century, Brussels had constructed its city walls and the city began to expand significantly. Today, traces of the wall can still be seen in downtown Brussels. In 1516 Charles V, who had been heir of the Low Countries since 1506, was declared King of Spain in St. Michael and St. Gudula Cathedral in Brussels. Right around the time this map was published, King Louis XIV of France sent troops to bombard Brussels with artillery. The event was devastating to the city, resulting in the loss of a third of the city. The reconstruction took a huge impact of the city, both in appearance as well as financially. This beautiful map shows a part of the duchy of Brabant in the Netherlands with Antwerp, Loewen towards Breda. Excellently hand-colored, highlighting the borders with fine shades of orange, pink, and yellow. The map is further decorated with an elegant cartouche borded with the coats of arms of Antwerp, Breda, Bergan op Z, Liere, and Herenials. Upper coats of arms represent the Duchy of Brabant. The lower left corner contains the Scale of Miles, as well as a trio of cartographers with a globe. This map is based on the cartographic sources by Michael Florent from Langren, who was the royal mathematician and astronomer to the King of Spain. At the end of the 15th century the foreign trading houses were transferred from Bruges to Antwerp, and the building assigned to the English nation is specifically mentioned in 1510. Antwerp became the sugar capital of Europe, importing the raw commodity from Portuguese and Spanish plantations. Antwerp grew to become the richest and second largest European city in the Alps. "the centre of the entire international economy, something Bruges had never been even at its height." (Braudel) At the beginning of the 16th century Antwerp accounted for 40% of world trade.
