Laminated illustrated wrappers, 8vo, approximately 132 pp, colour ills. 374 lots. From the introduction: "The present catalogue crosses the boundaries of Swann's regularly scheduled auctions. Although most of it could be described as Americana, dozens of lots are in the realm of English history, with a few from Africa and continental Europe. The formats go well beyond our usual books and manuscripts, including newspapers, posters, broadsides, photographs, and maps. The chronological scope remains broad, from a 1567 illustrated news sheet (lot 251) to a 1988 autographed poster from Jesse Jackson's presidential campaign (lot 20), and covering almost every decade in between. Two of the top lots in the sale are rare books. Admiranda Narratio Fida Tanien, de Commodis et Incolarum Ritibus Virginiae (lot 100) is the 1590 first Latin edition of Theodor de Bry's work on Virginia, promoting the bright prospects of the doomed Roanoke colony. A Briefe Relation of the Discovery and Plantation of New England (lot 233) was published in London in 1622-before the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Only one other copy has appeared at an American auction since 1921. Files of press photographs dating from the 1920s to the 1970s, with contemporary captions affixed to the verso, cover baseball and film stars as well as major news events. Posters from the late 1960s and early J 970s (most in lots 264 to 283) illustrate psychedelia and Vietnam War protests, while Flaggs famous "I Want You" poster from 1917 (lot 368) represents an earlier era. In the manuscript realm, an original indictment of accused witch Margaret Scott from 11692 (lot 214) is the first manuscript from the Salem Witch Trials to come to auction in almost forty years ? The Civil War diary of Lieutenant William Dixon who served as an escort at Lincoln's funeral, is another highlight, .Autograph items from figures such as Thomas Edison, the Beatles, Henry Knox and P.T. Barnum are also included in the sale. Cabinet cardsand early photographs are well represented, including American Indian portraits by some of the giants of the genre - Edward Curtis, Frank Rinehart, David Barry, and William Soule - but also a remarkably well- preserved campaign carte-de-visite of Abraham Lincoln (lot 207) and a signed Robert E. An issue of the Gazette of the United States dated 13 June 1789 (lot 143) includes the first printing of the Bills of Rights in any form. An impressive run of the Gentlemans Magazine from 1731 to 1800 (lot 213) includes countless early American maps and reporting. A very early issue of the Boston News-Letter from 1719 (lot 252) includes important news of the Louisiana territory coming under control of the Company of the West. A dormant interest in the Polar world was reawakened in the mid-1980s while President of The Explorers Club (1985-87). From 1991-95 I served as ship's surgeon aboard Russian icebreakers in the tourist trade for Quark Expeditions and traveled to the far ends of the earth. In all, I have made 19 memorable trips to the Polar regions.
