Name, address and date in ink on fep. Clear plastic wrapper around boards. Cover has some wear and soiling. Nicolas Poussin (June 1594 - 19 November 1665) was the leading painter of the classical French Baroque style, although he spent most of his working life in Rome. Most of his works were on religious and mythological subjects painted for a small group of Italian and French collectors. He returned to Paris for a brief period to serve as First Painter to the King under Louis XIII and Cardinal Richelieu, but soon returned to Rome and resumed his more traditional themes. In his later years he gave growing prominence to the landscapes in his pictures. His work is characterized by clarity, logic, and order, and favors line over color. Until the 20th century he remained a major inspiration for such classically-oriented artists as Jacques-Louis David, Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres and Paul Cézanne. Esther Stella Isaac Alfred Sutro OBE (August 7, 1863, London - September 11, 1933 Surrey, England) was a British author and dramatist. Her 'Pastels of France' were exhibited in January 1927 at the Leicester Galleries. Mrs. Sutro gives, in this the first English study of Poussin, an account of the life of a painter devoted to his art. No painter pursued his tasks more ardently than Poussin. Greek and Roman works served him not merely as models, but rther as a justification fof his own conclusions and intuitions. Poussin could pay full homage to the genius of the past without denying anything to the powerful impulses of his own crative vitality. Sir William Rothenstein (29 January 1872 - 14 February 1945) was an English painter, printmaker, draughtsman, lecturer, and writer on art. He is perhaps best known for his work as a war artist in both world wars, his portraits, and his popular memoirs, written in the 1930s. More than two hundred of Rothenstein's portraits of famous people can be found in the National Portrait Gallery collection. This copy was owned by a Katharine Duncan Upham Hunter of West Claremont, NH, believed to be the Mary Hunter of West Claremont, NH who died on April 17, 2017 at the age of 103. She was born in Washington, DC on April 12, 1914. She earned her bachelor of science degree from the University of New Hampshire in 1936. Mary married Duncan Upham Hunter of West Claremont, NH on June 10, 1939. Duncan served in the U. S. Army Engineers during the Second World War in the South Pacific. This Army service lead her to be a life-long supporter of the American Red Cross. She also served the Ladies Union Aid Society at the Claremont Hospital during the War and was President from 1946 to 1948. An abiding interest in local history lead to Mary's service to the Claremont Historical Society, the West Claremont Burying Ground and Historic Deerfield of Deerfield, Massachusetts. She was also interested in the history of the Sullivan Machinery Company (now Joy Manufacturing), in which her husband's family was involved from its founding. Clear plastic cover has some soiling and a chipped corner.
