His two formidable opponents were King Harold of England and William of Normandy, otherwise known as William the Conqueror. King Harald's Saga tells the story of this famous leader who fought from Russia to Sicily, and how his claim to the throne of England was rewarded with 'seven feet of English soil'. This superb portrait is a part of the immense Heimskringla ('The Orb of the World'), a remarkable work of medieval history written some 170 years after Harald's death by the Icelandic historian Snorri Sturluson. Sturluson sees history as a continual flow, a long chain of events connected to individual personalities. A portrait gallery of human aspirations and failings, his narrative is a vividly readable saga~history where every action corresponds to personal motivation and men are ruled by their emotions~principally love and hate or ambition and revenge, Sturluson reveals this Viking ruler's resourcefulness and cunning, and details both his gift for leadership and expertise in double~dealing. King Harald's Saga is a fascinating account of one of the central participants from a pivotal point in European history. SNORRI STURLUSON was born in 1179 and brought up at Oddi, the home of an aristocratic and cultured family in the south of Iceland (1181~1201). He then lived as a wealthy landowner, politician and lawyer, and was Lawspeaker of the Althing from 1215~18 and 1222~31. He visited Norway twice, 1218~20 (when he also went to Sweden) and 1237~9. In 1241 Snorri Sturluson was killed by his enemies. An outstanding personality of medieval Scandinavia and Iceland, he was the author of Egil 's Saga, and of Heimskringla, a history of the kings of Norway from the half~mythical origins of the dynasty down to the year 1177.…
