Trade Paperback. Condición: Like New. 397 pp. An excellent, spotlessly clean copy! Clean, fresh, sharp, tight, essentially flawless copy with crisp pages, clean text, and very light shelf wear. Synopsis: Sherlock Holmes is a fictional character of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries who first appeared in publicatio…n in 1887. He was the creation of Scottish author and physician Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. A brilliant London-based consulting detective, Holmes is famous for his intellectual prowess and is renowned for his skillful use of astute observation, deductive reasoning and forensic skills to solve difficult cases. Conan Doyle wrote four novels and fifty-six short stories that feature Holmes. The first story, A Study in Scarlet, appeared in Beeton's Christmas Annual in 1887 and the second, The Sign of the Four, in Lippincott's Monthly Magazine in 1890. The character grew tremendously in popularity with the beginning of the first series of short stories in The Strand Magazine in 1891; further series of short stories and two serialised novels appeared until 1927. The stories cover a period from around 1880 up to 1907, with a final case in 1914. All but four stories are narrated by Holmes' friend and biographer, Dr. John H. Watson; two are narrated by Holmes himself, this including the Blanched Soldier, and two others are written in the third person. In two stories (The Musgrave Ritual and The Adventure of the Gloria Scott), Holmes tells Watson the main story from his memories, whereas Watson becomes the narrator of the frame story. Conan Doyle said that the character of Holmes was inspired by Dr. Joseph Bell, for whom Doyle had worked as a clerk at the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. Like Holmes, Bell was noted for drawing large conclusions from the smallest observations. Robert Mathias (Cover Design); John Atkinson Grimshaw (Cover Illustration) (ilustrador).

Hardcover. Condición: Very good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very good. xvi, 618, [6] pages. Illustrations. Map. Main Characters. A Note on Sources. Notes. Bibliography. Index. Stuart A. Reid is a Senior Fellow for History and Foreign Policy at the Council on Foreign Relations and the author of The Lumumba Plot. From 2008 to 202…4, he worked as an editor at Foreign Affairs, finishing his time at the magazine as executive editor. He has written for publications including The Atlantic, The New York Times, The Washington Post, Bloomberg Businessweek, Politico Magazine, and Slate. He earned a bachelor's degree in government from Dartmouth College. The New York Times Book Review Editors' Choice A spellbinding work of history that reads like a Cold War spy thrillerabout the U.S.-sanctioned plot to assassinate the democratically elected leader of the newly independent Congo. A BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR: The New Yorker, The Economist, Financial Times. "This is one of the best books I have read in years . . . gripping, full of colorful characters, and strange plot twists." Fareed Zakaria, CNN host. It was supposed to be a moment of great optimism, a cause for jubilation. The Congo was at last being set free from Belgiumone of seventeen countries to gain independence in 1960 from ruling European powers. At the helm as prime minister was charismatic nationalist Patrice Lumumba. Just days after the handover, however, the Congo's new army mutinied, Belgian forces intervened, and Lumumba turned to the United Nations for help in saving his newborn nation from what the press was already calling "the Congo crisis." Dag Hammarskjöld, the tidy Swede serving as UN secretary-general, quickly arranged the organization's biggest peacekeeping mission in history. But chaos was still spreading. Frustrated with the fecklessness of the UN and spurned by the United States, Lumumba then approached the Soviets for helpan appeal that set off alarm bells at the CIA. To forestall the spread of Communism in Africa, the CIA sent word to its station chief in the Congo, Larry Devlin: Lumumba had to go. Within a year, everything would unravel. The CIA plot to murder Lumumba would zzle out, but he would be deposed in a CIA-backed coup, transferred to enemy territory in a CIA-approved operation, and shot dead by Congolese assassins. Hammarskjöld, too, would die, in a mysterious plane crash en route to negotiate a cease- re with the Congo's rebellious southeast. And a young, ambitious military officer named Joseph Mobutu, who had once sworn fealty to Lumumba, would seize power with U.S. help and misrule the country for more than three decades. For the Congolese people, the events of 196061 represented the opening chapter of a long horror story. For the U.S. government, however, they provided a playbook for future interventions. First Edition [stated], presumed first printing. David Lindroth (Map), Mark Jaworski (Author photog (ilustrador).
