This is the 1908 edition, being a reprint of the Fowler, Dick & Walker, 1858 one printed under the patronage of the Dial Rock Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution. Hardcover, 5 1/4 x 7 1/2 inches, original green and black pictorial cloth, with a paste-down drawing of the heroine on front board, floral decorative spine, stamped white lettering on front board, 382 pp, illustrated with 4 plates (drawings by J Watson Davis; all present) and extra illustrated with photographic plates showing the actual sites of the incidents in the book, plus a period drawing of Forty Fort. Very good, no dustjacket. Corners bumped with a bit of cardboard exposed there, a few approximately 1/8th inch nicks at head and foot of spine and another such on lower edge of front board, just a bit of the dye rubbed off lettering on front board, 1/2 incn drop mark on side edge of front board, title written (in pencil) on top edge of textblock. Internally, previous owner's (Lyda Cary) signature (in pencil) , a bit shaken with hairline hinge cracks between a few of the gatherings, otherwise tight, clean, paper crisp, unmarked. Historical novel set in the Wyoming Valley of northeast Pennsylvania, now the Wilkes-Barre Scranton area, during the American Revolution and the Battle of Wyoming and subsequent massacre. Geological Survey topographic coverage, shows cultural details (individual buildings, roads, railroads, etc.) in addition to soil types and distribution within the region, necessary for delineating important and desirable agricultural areas. Descriptions and characteristics of soil classifications shown on the map are provided in the report together with information about principal and lesser crops grown at the time of the survey. An early edition and possibly the first soil survey of Perry County. Later soil surveys provide more maps and finer details but lack the visual appeal, simplicity, and historical content of this earlier large color map. *** Condition: Complete as issued. Ex-library with ink stamp and call numbers on front wrapper, else the booklet is internally clean with no other markings. Removed from bound volume with roughness and chipping to wrappers along the bound edge, loose or detaching pages, and stitch holes along the left margin not affecting the map. The map has a couple of short opening tears and is bright, crisp, and clean.
