After German reunification in 1990, an influx of Jewish refugees from the former Soviet Union dramatically transformed the Jewish community, strengthening it an leading to a remarkable Jewish renaissance. At all stages, the Central Council has played a crucial role, evolving into a modern, dynamic and proactive institution whose voice is heard well beyond the Jewish community and is respected in Germany s social, intellectual and political life.

Damit einhergehend haben sich auch die Aufgaben des Zentralrats gewandelt, insbesondere in seiner Funktion als Vertreter der jüdischen Gemeinschaft seit der Wiedervereinigung. Behandelt werden auch die heutige Stellung des Zentralrats als 'Moralinstanz', im interreligiösen Dialog, bei der Integrationsfrage und im Dialog mit der Politik. Anekdotenhaft erzählte Begebenheiten beleuchten schlaglichtartig und durchaus unterhaltsam, mit welchen Problemen und Herausforderungen der Zentralrat zu kämpfen hatte und hat und wie er sie bewältigt.
