Paperback. Condición: New. Beginning in the 1950s, Judit Reigl (b. Kapuvár, Hungary, 1923; d. Marcoussis, France, 2020) builds a singular creative oeuvre between abstraction and figuration, between Surrealism and gestural painting. After studying art in Budapest, Reigl flees Hungary in 1950; arriving in Paris, she is introduced to André Breton, who organizes her first exhibition in 1954. Under the influence of the École de Paris, she branches out into écriture automatique, then shifts toward free expression.Like her contemporaries Jackson Pollock and Helen Frankenthaler in New York, she lays out ever larger unprimed canvases on the floor and works them with a brush, her fingers, or other instruments. After 1966, bodily shapes emerge from her abstractions, and figures reappear in the pictures. On occasion of Reigl's centenary and the gift of three major works, the Neue Nationalgalerie mounts the artist's first solo exhibition at a museum in Germany. The book surveys the oeuvre of one of the most important protagonists of European art in the second half of the twentieth century. …

Hardcover. Condición: new. Hardcover. In Search of the Ideal ShapeConstantin Brancusi (b. Hobita, Romania, 1876; d. Paris, 1957) ranks among the pre-eminent modernist sculptors and has exercised a defining influence over generations of contemporary artists. Having completed his academic training in Romania, he set out at the age of twenty-eight for a tour of Europe before settling in Paris. Organic and stripped down to the essential, his works establish him as a pioneer of sculptural abstraction in the early twentieth century. Brancusis persistent pursuit of a creative ideal is manifest in the formal variations of a few motifs and his playful exploration of diverse materials and surfaces. He deftly used specific pedestals, lighting, and movement as well as photography and film to dramatize his sculptures. The retrospective at the Neue Nationalgalerie, Berlinproduced in cooperation with the Centre Pompidou, Parisis accompanied by this comprehensive catalogue, which sheds light on the manifold facets of Brancusis oeuvre: it features major works from international collections as well as views of his studio. Photographs of the artist from his personal collection round out the extensive plate section. With an introduction by Ariane Coulondre; and other essays by Nina Schallenberg on Brancusis staging of his works, and Maike Steinkamp on the reception of his art in Europe Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.…
