April 1862 in Luzern) war ein Schweizer Arzt und liberaler Politiker. Er war auch Redakteur und schuf 1841 schuf kurzfristig den eigenständige und politisch radikale Zeitung "Der Eidge…nosse von Luzern", der aber bereits 1844 von der Regierung verboten wurde und der Zensur zum Opfer fiel. Für seine Beteiligung an den aufständischen Freischärlerzügen 1844 und 1845 wurde er in einem aufsehenerregenden Prozess zum Tode verurteilt. Durch glückliche Fügung und getragen von einer Sympathiewelle des Volkes konnte Steiger mit Hilfe seiner Bewacher aus dem Kesselturm entfliehen und wurde in Zürich mit Jubel empfangen. Nach dem Sturz der konservativen Regierung 1847 kehrte er wieder nach Luzern zurück und nahm verschiedene politische Funktionen ein. Das vorliegende Bildnis zeigt den aufrechten liberalen Freidenker und Kämpfer "beim Zurücktreten von der Redaktion des ". Unterrrand mit einer empathischen Ansprache (in faks. Handschrift) für eine bessere Zukunft, für die Abschaffung der Willkürherrschaft, für die Bekämpfung des Unrechts, der Lüge und Heuchelei und die Verbannung des Jesuitismus etc. - Sauber und sehr gut erhalten. Jakob Robert Steiger war ein führender Repräsentant der radikalen Richtung des Luzerner Liberalismus. 1844 gehörte er zu den Initianten der Vetobewegung gegen die Jesuitenberufung und beteiligte sich an der Vorbereitung des Ersten Freischarenzugs. Beim Zweiten Freischarenzug von 1845, den er vom Aargau aus mitorganisiert hatte, wurde er gefangen genommen und in einem aufsehenerregenden Prozess zum Tode verurteilt. Er konnte fliehen und liess sich in Winterthur nieder. Nach dem Sonderbundskrieg zählte er in Luzern zu den Wortführern des freischärlerischen Radikalismus. Er gab den Anstoss zur Aufhebung der Klöster St. Urban und Rathausen. 1843-1847 Präsident der Helvetischen Gesellschaft, 1834-1839 und 1855-1859 der Ärztegesellschaft Luzern, 1854-1862 Schulrat des Eidgenössischen Polytechnikums. Die Todesstrafe vor Augen verfasste er noch einige Pamphlete und dieses Erinnerungsblatt mit Abschiedsworten an seine Familie und "Lebensregeln" für seinen Sohn. - In dieser Zeit gab es noch Männer, die für ihre Überzeugung und für bürgerliche Freiheit einstanden. Umso wichtiger für unsere Zeit, dass wir solche im Andenken und als Vorbilder bewahren und zumindest ihre Werke erhalten. - Durch glückliche Fügung und getragen von einer Sympathiewelle des Volkes konnte Steiger mit Hilfe seiner Bewacher aus dem Kesselturm entfliehen und wurde in Zürich mit Jubel empfangen.
