Head and tail of spine lacking with exposed binding. Title label on front board soiled, but legible. Scattered foxing and age-staining throughout text-block with normal toning. The first attempt at the compilation of local history in Berks County was made in 1841 by William Stahle, a storekeeper at Reading. He published a small volume of 68 pages in two editions, one in the English language and the other in the German, entitled A Description of the Borough of Reading, and it related chiefly to the business affairs of Reading. The book was prepared for him by Jackson H. Sherman, a young lawyer, who had shortly before been admitted to practice in the Courts of Berks County. The first published account of the Borough of Reading PA by Major William Stahle. Stahle was a prominent businessman who introduced the first coal stove to Reading. The book provides a brief history of the borough and contains information on the businesses, local politicians, courts, hotels, timing of stages and other important historical information.
