Condición: New. 2014 reprint of the 1914 War Office publication. SB. iv + 150ppPublished Price £11.50 This Intelligence Directorate publication consists of two parts: the Handbook of the Belgian Army of 1906 and a supplementary 'Field Notes on the Belgian Army, 1914,' which updates the order of battle and organisational details. The contents actually show this second part as including field notes on the French and German Armies, but only the Belgian Army is featured. All the relevant information is provided on the 1906 Army, conditions of service, infantry, cavalry, artillery etc with unit locations, uniforms, badges of rank, arms, equipment and supply. There is also a chapter on the Gendarmerie and Civic Guard. The Belgian Army was made up of two forces: the Field Army and Fortress Troops. In 1914 the Field Army consisted, like the BEF, of six infantry and one cavalry division and its strength, too, was similar at 150,000. Fortress Troops numbered 130,000. Book.…

Condición: New. Softback 2026 N&MP reprint (of original pub September 1916). 120 pp., with 21 plates of line drawings showing British & German grenades + 11 photographs depicting methods of throwing Reprinted from the revised British edition of September 1916, this manual outlines the principles governing the use of hand and rifle grenades in trench warfare. It covers training, organisation, offensive and defensive employment, safety measures, and the characteristics of British and German grenade types. The text is supported by line drawings and photographic plates illustrating proper throwing technique.By 1916, grenades had become indispensable in trench combat, evolving from improvised "jam-tin" and "hairbrush" designs into standardised weapons essential for clearing trenches and dugouts. Rifle grenades extended striking range beyond that achievable by hand.Specialised "bombing parties" emerged as key assault elements, tasked with clearing trenches systematically and driving defenders from cover-particularly valuable in conditions where small arms frequently malfunctioned. The manual details the tactical employment of grenadiers, emphasising that grenades were primarily for close-quarters trench fighting rather than open-ground engagements. It specifies command responsibilities, the organisation of bombing squads, supply arrangements, equipment, training requirements, and the appropriate integration of rifle and bayonet techniques when manoeuvring around trench traverses.Originally War Time printed by Harrison & Sons, photographic and engraved illustrations fall short of modern printing and type standards. In printing in facsimile from the original, imperfections and lightness of type are inevitably reproduced in this reprint. Book.…

Condición: New. SB The 1940 part has 337pp, the supplement a further 73 with b/w illus and drawings throughout. To be accurate this book should have been titled 'Handbook of the Soviet Army', though the contents page refers to 'The Red Army.' It begins with a short historical sketch covering the Great War, the Revolution and the construction and development of the post-revolution army, the Soviet or Red Army. There is a detailed treatment of the 1940 army in which the combat arms (infantry, cavalry, artillery, armour and engineers) and the services (transport, supply, medical etc) are described with organization, strength and equipment details in each case. Chemical Warfare is also discussed and, of course, the ever-pervading internal security troops, the police, Frontier Guards, Partisan units, women's and youth organizations. The supplement provides an update on tactics and organization as well as illustrations of uniforms, badges of rank, service emblems and orders and medals. There are also pictures of guns, tanks and other equipment. There is a glossary of military terms and abbreviations (brush up your cyrillic alphabet) and a list of conventional signs. Even the Navy features in this book of the Red Army. Book.…
