It details his day-by-day adventures in his search for the source of the Nile, including myriad accounts of experiences such as his enjoyment of courtly life in the native palace in Uganda and, of course, expeditions of big game hunting. Well illustrated with about 75 engravings (chiefly from drawings by Captain Grant -- a few tissue-guarded), and two maps. One of the maps is a full page page map in blue and red, by Lieut. Francis Wilford that shows the course of Nile from its source. Bound in at the rear is a very large folding color map of Eastern Equatorial Africa by Keith Johnston, with the route of the expedition traced by hand in red. This is Speke's account of his 3rd African exploration expedition (1860-1863). The Royal Geographical Society sent Speke back to Africa to fix the location of Lake Victoria and determine if it really was the source of the Nile. Speke was in command of this expedition, accompanied by Captain Grant. Most of the 75 illustrations in this book are based on sketches by Grant. Speke and Grant became the first Europeans to travel from Zanzibar to the Central African Lakes and then north to the Mediterranean. Speke saw Lake Victoria again, and found Ripon Falls, the place where the Nile flows out of the great lake. Speke and Grant then travelled overland north to Godonkoro where Samuel Baker was waiting for them with fresh supplies and boats that took them down the navigable Nile to the Mediterranean. Because of dense vegetation, lack of supplies, disease, and exhaustion, Speke and Grant lost track of the Victoria Nile for days at a time on their walk to Godonkoro. They never saw Lake Kyoga or Lake Albert. While their expedition convinced most educated geographers that Lake Victoria was indeed the source of the Nile, they had not definitively proved it, a fact the excluded Burton delighted in pointing out. The first owner of this book was the Irish lawyer and Conservative politician, The Right Honourable John Edward Walsh (1816-1869) , Attorney-General for Ireland (1866) and Master of the Rolls in Ireland (1866-1869). Walsh's bookplate is on the front pastedown. It was common in the 19th century for book buyers to have their new books rebound in custom decorative bindings tailored to their individual taste.
