Lacking volume one only. Each volume is illustrated with a frontispiece and one plate. Collated complete. The life and correspondence of Robert Southey,…an English poet of the Romantic school who was appointed Poet Laureate in 1813. As one of the Lake Poets, along with William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Southey began his writing career as a radical, but he became steadily more conservative as he gained respect for Britain and its institutions. With examples of correspondence to John Rickman, Neville White, Grosvenor Charles Bedford, and Hartley Coleridge, amongst others. Edited by his son, Rev. Charles Cuthbert Southey. Cuthbert was embarrassed by many of his father"s views, including his religious unorthodoxy, enthusiasm for alcohol, and open condemnation of some public figures. Many of these aspects of Southey"s life were suppressed in Cuthbert"s edition of this work. With publisher's advertisements to the rear of volume II. In the original full cloth binding. Externally, sound with rubbing and light bumping to the extremities. Minor fading to the spine with the odd small mark to the boards. Small splits in the cloth to the head and tail of the spines and an occasional joint. Spine lifting to volume six. Hinges just starting but firm, other than the hinges of volume three which are tender. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with the odd small spot and minor age toning to the endpapers. Contemporary ink inscription to the front pastedown. With previous owner's bookplate to the front pastedown of volume IV. Good. None (ilustrador). book.

Edges lightly rubbed. Letter dated 5/3/1891 from E. D. North at Charles Scriber's Sons to an unnamed recipient (indicating that he was sending… this set and two other works on "approbation") has been folded and neatly bound in. Later gift inscription in first volume dated 1941. Scattered foxing, soiling and edge-wear in both volumes. All edges gilt, presumably when this was rebound. Major contributors to these volumes were Southey, Samuel Taylor Coleridge and Charles Lamb. No more volumes published. Two issue points: (1) "War Poem" by Southey was deemed objectionable so almost all copies, including this one, were issued without leaf B8 (pages 31-32) in Volume I which contained that poem; and (2) leaf C3 (pages 37-38) in Volume II is in uncancelled state with "wicked" appearing on line 9 on page 37.
