Hardcover. xxxv, 553 p.; 8 pl.; 21 cm. [London edition 1880-82, 3 vols.; first thus in 1883] Samuel Wilberforce, 1805-1873. `It is fitting to say a few words about the manner in which the three English volumes have been compressed into the single American one, without, it is believed, any substandital loss of interest of value.…Much was gained, of course, by the use of smaller print, and scarcely less by the careful excision of unnecessary or unimportant words and phrases--lists of names, titles, trivialities, redundancies, and repetitions of all sorts; most of which, especially to an American reader, tended rather to burden than to assist the understanding. The latest volume of the English edition, which is chiefly responsible for the ferment across the water, is the most substantially reproduced, not so much to gratify the general desire to see the so-called "revelations" as becuase it is the most interesting.' (p. xvi) Good olive cloth, spine ends frayed. Note at head of title-page.

Stiff card, H 11.75cm x L 7.75cm. Printed on one side only but with antiquarian ink markings on blank verso. Foxing and toning to both sides of card. Top 5.5cm has chromolithograph illustration of flowered wreath with a bird and butterfly. Thin blue ruled border along edges. Text begins "This Card is Perfumed with "Hoyt's German… Cologne," the most delightful odor of the age." Unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately) the card has NOT retained the cologne aroma. Text concludes with trial size specified at 25 cents and large bottles at $1 "Sold by all Druggists and Fancy Goods dealers. E.W. Hoyt & Co., Proprietors, Lowell, Mass." And stamped at bottom is "Presented by L. Lawson & Son, Notions, Fancy Goods, &c., Greensboro, Ala." Located in Hale County in west central Alabama, Greensboro was a wealthy agricultural town which retained some prosperity during Reconstruction as this card, although undated, should be contemporary to the mid 1870s.

4pp., 12mo. Bifolium. Good, on lightly-aged paper. Palgrave begins: 'My dear Inglis/ | I have had such avalanches [last word underlined] of business - and most of a confidential nature - that I have really been unable to write to you. By confidential business I mean business of a class which I cannot open to mhy clerks - and wha…t must be either copied by my own hands or at home - If it had not been for Fanny Brown in addition to her sister I do not know what I should have done'. He has a 'distant notion' of his 'future plans': going to Albano in August, and staying there until 'Rome becomes tolerably healthy'. He is in 'much perplexity about future residence', findigin it 'so difficult to suit me and your brothers'. He hopes to 'get rather more out of London', and thinks 'Mr Freshfield's house just behind Mr F's may suit'. In the last paragraph Palgrave refers to 'K Hall' and the 'hope that Frank [Palgrave's eldest son, Francis Turner Palgrave (1824-1897), editor of the celebrated 'Golden Treasury'] will fall upon his legs [.] But I can give no help in this matter, however much I could wish.'.

2pp., 4to. Good, on lightly-aged laid paper. Bower begins by stating that he is sending 'a Copy of a Letter which I have received from Dr Carm Smyth [James Carmichael Smyth (1742-1821) of the Middlesex Hospital]'. Smyth's son (the future Sir James Carmichael-Smyth) is 'a very fine handsome young man Lieut in the Engineers come o…ut a Passanger [sic] in the same ship with us'. Bower and Smyth 'wisely went into the Boat which was lashed to the Stern Gallery to fish sharks which were following the ship - the Boat suddenly canted round in the slings, upon which poor Smyth went plump into the sea'. Bower 'happened to catch hold of the Boat & by the dictate of instinct & fear together, scrambled up again & got into the Stern Gallery'. The slings being 'foul', an attempt to lower the boat failed, and 'poor Smyth was nearly exhausted when I jumpt from the great Cabin window & kept him up till we were both Pickt up'. Bower continues: 'I will thank you to tell his Dad that I think myself well rewarded for my Ducking by the satisfaction I derive from his Letter'. Dr Smyth has sent Bower 'a very fine field Glass', and Bower asks his father to 'tell Sandy to call on Dr Smyth if he goes to London, he is a man of considerable eminence in his profession'. The doctor has 'exerted himself on my account for my promotion in the Army', and 'if he can serve either Graham or Sandy' Bower will think himself 'Greatly overpaid'. The Gentleman's Magazine of February 1800, pp.181-182, gives an unusually long entry on Captain Bower's death, at 'the isle of Perrim, on the Red Sea', praising his character and accomplishments.
