The book first appeared ten years earlier in 1968. Large format. ***Near fine in blue cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to the spine. The boards are clean and only slightly marked. No bumps or creases to the cloth. Corners sharp. Page block edges perfectly clean. No reading lean to the binding. Spine tight. Internally clean with no foxing, creases or tears - except for a scuff-tear to the surface of the gutter between the last printed page (454) and the flags, caused by glue residue from the binding process - not too noticeable (please see scans). ***In a near fine illustrated dustwrapper, which has not been price-clipped, retaining the original printed price of £15.00 net. The dustwrapper is complete, with no discernible faults - just very light rubbing and creasing at the edges, with some very slight yellowing of the white areas. Dustwrapper clean and bright. ***vii prelim-pages plus 454 printed pages including two maps, Index of Ship Names, Index of Submarine Cables and a General Index plus House Flags at the back of the book. 250mm x 180mm. ***'At the end of forty-five years service in telecommunications the greater part of which I have been associated with submarine cables and cableships it is a privilege and great pleasure to introduce this second edition of a volume that has become a standard reference work. Nowhere else is collected together in one volume the varied and fascinating histories and details of all the cable laying and repair ships since the dawn of submarine technology. With this advancing technology, as alive today as it ever was, reference to our forbears in the construction and development of the submarine cable networks of the world most admirably complements the achievements of the cableships themselves and those that have gone down to the sea in an arduous service.' (Quote taken from the author's Foreword to the second edition) ***'The first submarine cable of any substantial length was laid by the steam tug Goliath in 1850 and with this act a new type of ship was born, the cableship. From 1850 the art of cable laying, for it was an art in those days, has developed into a precise science, and with it the cableship has been evolved with all its peculiarities and idiosyncrasies. A perusal of the succeeding chapters will indicate the extent to which the British shipbuilding industry created this particular generic class of vessel, the demand arising from the creation of the submarine cable industry also by British effort and capital. (Quote taken from the author's Introduction) ***First printing of the second edition - revised and updated with new material - a difficult book to find in such nice clean bright condition. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.
