8vo, 1 p, 14 lines. On lightly aged paper, with 9 cm closed tear (affecting a few words, but not the signature) neatly repaired on reverse with archival tape. A letter of condolence on the death of Mrs Slocombe's husband, 'after his long illness'. Salisbury is 'sure he must have had a very courageous spirit to the end - I rememb…er it so well at the Academy Schools'. He suggests a firm that might be willing to buy 'the canvases etc you mention'. The letter links two artists who studied together at the Royal Academy Schools, and also establishes the date of Slocombe's death as 1906. (He is described as 'Shirley Slocombe (floruit 1887-1916)' on the National Portrait Gallery website.).

Cloth. Condición: Very Good Indeed. First edition. Two first edition volumes from Percy Macquoid's monumental and prolific history of English furniture, the first major survey of the subject which is an authoritative work to this day. Percy Thomas MacQuoid was a renowned British theatrical designer and notable collector and conn…oisseur of English furniture. This set contains the first and third volume in the four volume series, 'The Age of Oak' and 'The Age of Mahogany'. This set is lacking 'The Age of Walnut' and 'The Age of Satinwood'. Within this work Macquoid explores the history, development, and evolution of English furniture from the Renaissance to the early nineteenth century, specifically exploring the connections between fashions in furniture to the political, historical and societal movements of the time. The work also contains information on carving techniques and the application of industrial techniques. With an errata slip tipped to the rear of 'The Age of Oak'. Copiously illustrated throughout with black and white plates, and fifteen coloured plates 'after Shirley Slocombe' to each volume. Each volume is lacking the original dustwrapper. In the publisher's original cloth binding, with gilt title to the spine and gilt embellishment to the front boards. Externally generally smart with slight bumping to extremities and head and tail of spine. Rubbing to boards and fading to spine. Front hinge slightly split and strained, 'The Age of Oak', but reasonably firm. Internally firmly bound. Pages very bright and clean, with the odd light spot to the occasional page. Large closed tear to page 161/2 repair with tape. Very Good Indeed. Shirley Slocombe (ilustrador). book.

Half Morocco. Condición: Very Good. First Edition. Folio. 1904 to 1908, important study of English furniture, reprinted several times, but none of the reissues capture the elegant production of the first edition, which is commensurate, in book-form, with the antique pieces it focuses upon. The volumes are internally very clean,…bindings tight. Foreedges have some soilage, not affecting pages themselves. Rubbing to spine along gutters, and morocco corners. Leather is contemporary -- of date of publication. Wear to spine tips, and some grubbiness in general to spine, but not disconcerting. Preliminaries in Vol One loose but still attached, but not affecting frontis ill page, nor title page and beyond. Otherwise, this and other volumes tight. Interiors fine, and thus overall the set is very good. 60 colour plates, and many other photographic illustrations -- over 900 black and white illustratiions.
