Hardcover. Condición: As New. 1st Edition, Limited Edition. A magnificent facsimile reproduction of one of the great monuments of Scottish topographical publishing, Theatrum Scotiae reproduces John Slezer's celebrated 1693 survey of Scotland, the first extensive illustrated description of the country ever published. A soldier, engineer, and surveyor to the Crown, Slezer travelled widely throughout Scotland recording its castles, palaces, towns, abbeys, bridges, and landscapes, producing a remarkable visual record of the nation in the late seventeenth century. His engravings preserve many buildings and views long since altered or lost, making the work an invaluable source for Scottish history, architecture, and genealogy. This finely produced Heritage Press facsimile, issued in a limited edition of just 500 copies, faithfully recreates the original publication and offers collectors and historians an opportunity to own one of the most important illustrated works relating to Scotland. The original full title of the first edition was; Theatrum Scotiæ: Containing the Prospects of Their Majesties Castles and Palaces; Together with those of the Most Considerable Towns and Colleges; the Ruins of Many Ancient Abbeys, Churches, Monasteries and Convents, Within the Said Kingdom. All Curiously Engraven on Copper Plates. With a Short Description of Each Place. By John Slezer. Printed by John Leake for Abell Swalle, London, 1693. This modern facsimile was published by Heritage Press (Scotland), Towie Barclay Castle, Aberdeenshire, 1979. Published as a deluxe issue of just 500 numbered copies - this being number 35. Signed by the Publisher, Binder, Printer and Paper supplier to the limitation page at the rear, ahead of the detailed list of Subscribers.
