Condición: Fine. Edinburgh & Glasgow, April 6 & 16, 1883., 1883. Fine. - An 8-page autograph letter by James Forlong on 7 inch high by 4-1/2 inch wide "Scottish Liberal Club, Edinburgh" letterhead embossed in blind at the top, signed "J. Forlong". In a letter dated April 6 [1883], Forlong writes to the noted ethnographer & Scottish artist William Simpson asking him to write a notice of "Rivers of Life" in the Glasgow Herald for the Scottish audience. He fears that the Scots will not understand "the religious spirit of the author". ".we who are enlightened should try & clear away some of the follies of our people & writing as I have done with this Jewish object, I hope you will give strength to my work & try to excite interest as to the real bases of faiths." "You are writing for a Scottish audience.who fancy as I often know that those who do not believe in their bad idea do not believe in any." He adds that if Simpson does not know Stoddart the editor of the Glasgow Herald well he will try to convince him to take such an article from Simpson.Together with a 1-1/4 page autograph letter by James Stoddart on 8 inch high by 5 inch wide "The Glasgow Herald" cream letterhead signed "Jas H Stoddart". In a letter dated 16th April 1883 Stoddart writes to William Simpson that the first notice Simpson wrote for the newspaper was only meant "to be [introductory of] a friend of the Col's." He goes on to say that a Mr. Campbell asked to review "Rivers of Life" at length but ".he is a friend of mine as well. That he will gladly leave the task in your hands." He then pays Simpson a compliment: "But why do you not publish your great work on this subject yourself? There is no one better able to write on it than you are."Both letters are folded for mailing, else near fine.James George Roche Forlong (1824-1904) was a Major General of the Indian Army. Trained as an engineer in Scotland and England, he joined the Indian Army in 1843 and later held posts with the government of Oudh. His exposure to Indian religions led him to explore, research and develop heterodox ideas about religious origins. His substantial work "Rivers of Life" was regarded as blasphemous by some for its sexual interpretations of religious rituals and symbolism.James H. Stoddart (1832-1888) received an appointment on the sub-editorial staff of the Glasgow Herald in 1852. After the retirement of William Jack in 1876, Stoddart took over the duties of the editor's post.William Simpson (1823-1899) was a noted Scottish artist and ethnographer and antiquarian. He wrote extensively on ancient religions, customs, and ancient artifacts. He was regarded by James Stoddart as "one of the first living authors" on ancient religions.
