Focusing on the literary andcinematic devices adopted in order to describe anddefine beur female identity, this study shows how thetexts under examination provide effectivereinterpretations of Western texts and canons thatwould be impossible without a deep knowledge of theoriginals. The use and reinterpretation ofautobiographical narration, fictional narration inthe third person, multivocal and polyphonicnarration, prove that beur literary texts can beinscribed à plein titre within the Western literarytradition. A similar approach is adopted for cinema,stressing the elements of continuity that tie beurfilms to the colonial production as well as to thepostcolonial non-mainstream production of the secondhalf of 20th century.…
