Trade Paperback. Very good in wrappers (paperback). Based in Japan and one of an emerging generation of young, world-class architects, Shigeru Ban (b. 1957) designs and builds graceful, serene structures using modest materials such as cardboard, paper tubes, bamboo, and prefabricated wood. His buildings are sometimes soaring and… birdlike, sometimes simple, grounded, and evocative of the Japanese aesthetic, but always they are integrated with and respectful of their surrounding environment. Ban has designed projects at both ends of the client spectrum: from one-room temporary houses of paper tubes for earthquake refugees worldwide to a 14,000 square-foot country house in Sharon, Connecticut -- his first U.S. commission. His humanitarian efforts and his interest in recyclable, affordable, natural materials have won praise and attention from museums and critics in America and Europe. Ban's Curtain Wall House was a favorite entry in the Museum of Modern Art's "Un-Private House" exhibition in 1999; he has gone on to design a museum for children in Japan, a canal museum in France, and a private art museum in Belgium; he was included in the 2000 and 2002 Venice Biennale, and created the Japan Pavilion for the Expo 2000 in Hannover, Germany. He was a member of the Think team of architects selected in February 2003 as one of two finalist teams to compete for the commission to design the new World Trade Center site in New York. The hardcover edition of this book is only the second book on Ban in print -- and unlike the first publication, it is the most recent and complete. Designed in Japan and in collaboration with Ban, it is divided into sections that reflect the architect's approach to materials, and presents 32 projects illustrated with colour photographs, plans, and sketches.

Hardcover. Condición: New. In 1994, after seeing photographs of the plastic sheets given to Rwandan refugees to live under, Shigeru Ban went to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees to propose ideas for better shelters. Since then, Ban has been critically heralded for his innovative approaches to environmentally soun…d architecture and his devotion to humanitarian efforts in the wake of some of the most devastating natural and man-made disasters. His temporary housing has employed everything from plastic beer cartons to paper tubes to create ingeniously flexible spaces. By sourcing unconventional, recycled, inexpensive, local and sustainable materials, he stimulates devastated economies by involving local resources and labor. These works stem from empathy and have restored shelter and gathering places, offering comfort, protection and dignity to stricken communities around the world. This important volume is the first book-length study to collect, catalogue and examine these works. Essays and discussions of individual projects, drawings in the artist's hand, instruction manuals, diverse photographs and a timeline and map make an essential compendium for the most personal and relevant aspect of Ban's work. The book is a major contribution to the broad subjects of humanitarian relief and sustainable design solutions, and provides an inspiring testament to Ban's ongoing dedication to our planet and its people.Born in Tokyo in 1957, Shigeru Ban studied at the Southern California Institute of Architecture and went on to Cooper Union's School of Architecture where he studied under John Hejduk. At age 48, Ban won the 2005 Thomas Jefferson Medal in Architecture from the University of Virginia. He was profiled by 'Time' in their projection of twenty-first-century innovators in the field of architecture and design. Ban was awarded the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 2014.

Hardcover. Condición: As New. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Boards (HB) in as new condition. dust jacket in near fine condition with slightest surface wear. Shigeru Ban may be best known for his evocative Curtain Wall House in Tokyo—a highlight of the Museum of Modern Art's 1999 Un-Private House exhibit—but… few know the range of this Japanese architect's work. In this first English-language monograph on Ban, 30 built projects reveal his inventiveness and humanitarianism. Ban's primary objectives in his work are the use of low cost materials and the dissolution of the boundaries between interior and exterior spaces.

Hardback. Condición: New. Despite being one of the oldest building materials, wood is revolutionising the way we design and construct buildings today. Criteria such as a changing work-life balance and working for a carbon-neutral future allow us to better account for the resources that buildings use and their effect on the natur…al environment. Studies have also shown the positive impacts of wood on health, wellness, and working toward equity in our local communities as we create beautiful spaces in which to gather, learn, and live. Initially applied in the early 2000s as a decorative element in the facade of buildings, mass timber is increasingly seen as an alternative to traditional steel-and-concrete construction. With advances in technology, mass timber is now even used in the structural frame of tall buildings. Featured in this title is a comprehensive survey of over 50 buildings. From museum projects like the Aspen Museum of Art to Pompidou Metz, the new global headquarters for Swatch and temporary shelters for both natural and man-made disasters, they showcase the state of the art in this emerging technology, one that imagines novel applications for this most ancient of building materials, as well as Mount Fuji World Heritage Center, La Seine Musicale Performance Hall in Paris, the Oita Prefectural Museum, and the 19-story Terrace House in Vancouver, the world s tallest mass timber building, scheduled for completion in 2022.

Studies have also shown the positive impacts of wood on health, wellness, and working toward equity in our local communities as we create beautiful spaces in which to gather, learn, and live. Featured in this book is a comprehensive survey of more than fifty buildings showcasing novel applications for this most ancient of building materials. Museum projects, corporate headquarters, resorts, residences, and temporary shelters for both natural and man-made disasters display the state of the art in wood construction, especially the emerging technology of mass timber, a fireproof composite material. Featured projects include the headquarters of Swatch and Omega, as well as the Aspen Museum, the Pompidou Metz, the Mount Fuji World Heritage Center, La Seine Musicale Performance Hall in Paris, the Oita Prefectural Museum, and the nineteen-story Terrace House in Vancouver, the worlds tallest mass timber building, scheduled for completion in 2022. The recipient of the 2014 Pritzker Prize in architecture, Shigeru Ban remains one of the most innovative architects. A pioneer in the use of sustainable materials, Ban is the most visible proponent of wood and bamboo in contemporary architecture, and nearly fifty new buildings and projects are featured in this latest volume of his work. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.
