Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. RAILROADS SHANDY MAGUIRE RECITATIONS EPICS EPISTLES LYRICS AND POEMS 1886 1ST. Anyone who looks through my listings will find plenty of railroad-related books, most of them contemporary. Here, however, is something truly special, and now quite scarce, in the world of railroad-related books, titled: Recitations, Epics, Epistles, Lyrics and Poems, Humorous and Pathetic, published by the Author, Patrick Fennell. This small hard cover book (5 ¼ x 7 ½ inches, 411 pages plus 4 pages of Table of Contents) was self-published by the Author as mentioned and printed by R.J. Oliphant, Book Printer and Stationer, of Oswego, New York, dated 1886 and the First Edition (so stated). The book is bound in dark maroon cloth with the gilt figure of a steam locomotive on the cover and gilt titles on the spine. Wikipedia was able to fill me in a bit about the author and his work, to wit: Patrick Fennell (1842 1916) was an American Locomotive engineer, union man with the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers, and writer, whose verse as "Shandy Maguire", among others, was a staple of the Locomotive Engineers Journal, and other trade and union publications. The dedication of this book reads as follows: "To the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers, an organization munificent in charity, adherent to principles, its members, faithful to duty and unselfish in peril, the contents of the following pages are fraternally dedicated by one who is proud to be one of their number: The Author." There is an engraved portrait of the Author as the Frontispiece but no other illustrations. Don t hesitate too long with this one; it won t last as the true Railfans will grab it up. Condition: This book is in very good condition. The hard covers are dust-dulled and the gilt decorations and titles show a bit of tarnishing but are still plainly visible. There has been some very minor bumping to the corners and spine tops. Inside, on the first blank page there are multiple gift inscriptions but those are the only marks I found in the book. The interior pages are uniformly age-toned but there is no foxing. Both hinges are intact, and the binding is tight, sound and square. This book is not ex-library or a remainder. You will be surprised at the condition of this book.…
