A different former owner's name and address/date details to the upper corner of the reverse of the front paste-down. The upper front board corner is significantly rubbed and chipped (with some loss). There is light rubbing to the other three board corners. There is a small stain mark to the rear board measuring around 2.5cm x 1cm. The cloth spine has browned but the gilt title remains very readable. A very good copy minus copy of a scarce first English translation of this saga.

A first edition of this translation of the Sverris saga, an Old Norse biography of the twelfth century King. With eight maps to the rear, collated but lacking the map called for in a pocket. In this uncommon work, J. Sephton translates this important historical source that was believed to have been written under the King's sponsorship. Although the saga is likely biased as a result it covers his rise to power, his victory over the Heklungs, his disputes with the church, and the 1196 Bagler war. Volume IV from the Northern Library Series. Prior owner's ink inscription to the recto of the front endpaper, 'B. J. Findlay 1966'. In the publisher's quarter cloth binding over hard boards. Externally, generally smart. Lightly rubbed to the boards, joints, and the spine. A little bumped to the extremities and the head of the spine. Internally, firmly bound. Aside from some light foxing tot the front and rear of the volume, pages are generally bright and clean. Very Good. book.
