Als einer der bedeutendsten franziskanischen Theologen begründete er die nach ihm benannte scholastische Richtung des Scotismus. Er verband darin u. a. Lehren des Aristoteles, des Augustinus und der Franziskaner auf feinsinnige Art miteinander, so dass Zeitgenossen ihn auch Doctor subtilis nannten. Duns Scotus untersuchte die philosophischen Kategorien der Möglichkeit und Notwendigkeit mit den Formen der Modallogik, wobei er diese in nichtformaler Weise anwandte.
