Seite 1 (von 2) der Einführung von Rüdiger Ruhnau: Die klassischen Zeiten deutscher Zeichenkunst und Graphik waren die erste Hälfte des 16. Jahrhunderts und das 19. Jahrhundert, an dessen Schwelle zwei Künstler aus dem an Malerpersönlichkeiten nicht besonders reichen deutschen Osten einander ablösten: Daniel Chodowieckis Lebensweg ging 1801 zu Ende, während Johann Carl Schultz im gleichen Jahr in Danzig das Licht der Welt erblickte. Das Geburtsjahr von J. D. Schultz fiel in eine Zeit weitreichender politischer Veränderungen. Danzig war nach jahrhundertelanger Selbständigkeit in den preußischen Staat eingegliedert worden, eine moderne Verwaltung löste die letzten Reste einer mittelalterlichen Stadtverfassung ab. Auch Zopf und Perücke, noch vor einem Vierteljahrhundert von Chodowiecki in seinem Skizzenbuch festgehalten, verschwanden aus dem Stadtbild. Ganz allgemein brachte der Übergang an Preußen so viele wirtschaftliche Vorteile, daß sich die Bevölkerung überraschend schnell mit den neuen politischen Verhältnissen abfand. In diesen Jahren, die als ruhig in der wechselvollen Danziger Geschichte bezeichnet werden können, wuchs Johann Carl Schultz in einem begüterten Elternhaus heran. Der Vater war Kaufmann, er besaß das Haus Jopengasse Nr. 25. Hier wurde der Junge groß, inmitten fremdländischer Waren, die man aus dem Orient und China über Holland bezog und die teils hier, zum Teil auch auf der Speicherinsel lagerten. Im Hausflur befand sich eine sogenannte Hangestube, ein hängender Einbau, geschmückt mit Kupferstichen und Veduten an den Wänden: für den heranwachsenden Jungen war dieser Raum der liebste Aufenthalt. Vom Fenster fiel der Blick auf die nahe Marienkirche - Bilder, die Schultz auch später nie vergessen konnte. Waren es jene bestimmenden Eindrücke der Jugendzeit, die ihm den Namen Kirchen-Schultz" einbrachten? Jedenfalls malte er in späteren Jahren unter anderem die Dome von Mailand und Orvieto, von Meißen und Regensburg, das Innere des Ulmer Münsters und der Marienburg. Danzigs wirtschaftlichem Aufschwung war keine lange Blüte beschieden. Napoleon eroberte Europa, das Land an der Weichsel wurde Kriegsschauplatz. Am 10. März 1 807 war Danzig von französischen Truppen umstellt, die Familie Schultz erlebte alle Schrecken der Belagerung mit. Die sich anschließende siebenjährige Besatzungszeit sollte aber alles vorhergegangene Unheil noch übertreffen; daran starb Schultz' Vater. Hinzu kam der Verlust des Familienvermögens, als beim Brand der Speicherinsel das Warenlager in Flammen aufging. Die 1814 erneut erfolgte Angliederung an Preußen leitete eine zweite Phase des wirtschaftlichen und kulturellen Aufbaus ein, dem sich Danzig im Schutze des preußischen Staates widmen konnte. Ebenso ungestört von politischen Ereignissen konnte sich nun die künstlerische Ausbildung von J. C. Schultz vollziehen. Er besuchte zunächst die Danziger Kunstschule - die sich seit 1804 in den oberen Räumen des Langgasser Tors befand - als Schüler des tüchtigen Johann Breysig. Bevor Professor Breysig die Leitung der Provinzial-Kunstschule in Danzig übernahm, war er Direktor an einem Magdeburger Kunstinstitut gewesen. Die weitere Ausbildung absolvierte Schultz bei Hummel an der Berliner Akademie. In Begleitung des Malers Karl Blechen ging er dann über Dresden nach München, wo der berühmte Vedutenmaler Domenico Quaglio, der auch schöne Danziger Ansichten schuf, sein Lehrer war. Wie auf zahlreiche andere Künstler, so übte Italien auch auf Johann Carl Schultz eine unwiderstehliche Anziehungskraft aus. Mehrere Jahre verbrachte er in Rom, wo er in Verbindung zu Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld trat. Die Begegnung mit den Kircheninterieurs und der antiken Kunst beeinflußte nachh.…
