The inspiration of the sailing ship for the artist, manifest in the great marine paintings of four hundred years, is part of the adventure too. So are the excitement and love inspired by the sailing ship in ordinary people, which created the demand for innumerable simple prints of ships throughout the age of sail. Captain Donald Macintyre has written a historical record of four centuries, from the first circumnavigation of the world to the virtual disappearance of the square~rigged ship. This is followed by a selection of contemporary writings of many nations, from 1520 to 1914 ( Francisco Antonio Pigafetta, William Bourne, Sir Francis Drake the Younger, Don Garcia Hurtado de Mendoza, Gerrit de Veer, Willem Cornelison Schouten, Thomas Heywood, A. Richer, George Lord Anson, Louis de Bougainville, Captain James Cook, Horatio Viscount Nelson, Captain Isaac Hull USN, Richard Dana, Captain H. A. Chippendale USN, Basil Lubbock, Basil Greenhill CBE, Joseph Conrad, etc.), each piece showing an important aspect of the age of sail, the whole combining with over three hundred beautiful illustrations to give a comprehensive picture of the sailing ship experience. Captain Macintyre traces the development of sails, rigging and hull design, from the caravel, carrack and galleon to the clipper epoch, when the sailing ship became a thing of visual and functional perfection; and beyond to the autumn of the age of sail, to the great steel~hulled four and five~masted barques and barquentines, which had a strange beauty of their own.' He tells the story of maritime exploration and the establishment of commerce : a story of friendly or hostile competition among nations sharing the common experience of the struggle against the sea. Adventure, in the ordinary sense of dramatic and exciting episodes, fills the history of sail and has received an extraordinary amount of eyewitness documentation. The selection of contemporary documents in this volume unfolds a stirring tale of storms, shipwrecks and fights, of famous ships and the men who sailed in them. It shows, as nothing else can, what life in sailing ships was really like. It relives great moments of discovery or despair, such as the first rounding of Cape Horn, or the last voyage of Willem Barents in his brave and futile search for the Northeast Passage, ennobled by the courage and dignity of a crew lost among ice and polar bears in the dark, dreaded Arctic winter. It evokes the brutality of life at sea, but also its warmer, more humorous side. After the horrors of Anson's voyage it is a relief to read of Bougainville's reception at Tahiti and the meeting of Cook's sailors with the nymphs of Nootka Sound. The odyssey of the human spirit is ever present in The Adventure of Sail, from the perceptive introduction by the famous modern sailing man and boat designer, Uffa Fox, to the highly.…

Añadir al carritoAmsterdami : apud Petrum Kærium, 1619. Second Latin edition. Small quarto, contemporary papered boards (rubbed); pp [8], 1-24, 17-71, nine folding maps and plates; title with largevignette of ships and a city and original owner's annotation 'This is in Dutch in ye. long booke pa : 145, 3 G.'; as in other copies, pages 14 and 15 misnumbered 4 and 5 (but emended in the original owner's hand); a fine copy in an unsophisticated contemporary binding, housed in a morocco and cloth clamshell box. The rare second Latin edition of the account of Schouten and Le Maire's important voyage. Schouten and Le Maire's expedition was sponsored by a group of Dutch merchants known as the Australian Company, a consortium in competition with the Dutch East India Company (VOC). The expedition's primary aim was to search for Terra Australis from the east, and it was the last seventeenth-century voyage to do so. In entering the Pacific from the Atlantic in 1616, Schouten and Le Maire sailed to the south of the Straits of Magellan, naming Cape Horn and discovering a new navigable passage to its south. Striking out westward across the Pacific in search of Terra Australis, they sailed through the Tuamotu archipelago, and were the first Europeans to visit the islands of Tonga. The expedition charted a substantial part of the coasts of New Ireland and New Guinea, before eventually reaching Batavia. The subjects of the maps and plates are: Map of the world in two hemispheres;Map of the South Sea;Plate of Porto Desire or Leeuwen Eylandt;Map of Tierra del Fuego, etc.;Plate of the Indian sailing canoe;Plate ofCocos Eylandt, etc.;Plate of the meeting with the Indian kings;Map of Nova Guinea;Plate ofHoornse Eijlandt Isle de Hoorn. The first Dutch edition of Schouten's account was published in 1618. The first Latin edition (NoviFreti, a parte meridionaliFretiMagellanici, in Magnum Mare Australe Detectio .) was published in Amsterdam by Jansson in 1619; this edition by PeterKærius, which is a translation of the second Dutch edition, appeared in the same year, shortly after Jansson's.Both the first and second Latin editions are of great rarity; we can locate fewer than ten copies of the second Latin edition at auction in the last hundred years, and none since 1960. [Full collation available.] With 8 folding engraved plates: a frontispiece world map adorned with portraits of Schouten, Magellan, Drake, van Noort, Candisch (Cavendish), and G. Speilbergh (i.e., Joris van Spilbergen?), 3 maps and 4 plates; as well as many in-text wood cut initials and headpieces. Bound in contemporary speckled calf with a blind double fillet border. On the spine, five raised bands. Title gilt to second panel in red morocco. Marbled end-papers. All edges of the text-block stained red. Green silk marking ribbon. Presented in a brown cloth slip-case. Rubbed, with some patches of wear. Strengthened at the corners. Crack at the front hinge. Lightly evenly tanned, with some soiling at the edges. Generally tanned throughout. Stub-tears (some repaired) to the folding maps. Collated complete against Sabin ("Sig. â in seven."). In June of 1615, the Eendracht and the Hoorn departed from Holland under the command of Willem Schouten (1567-1625) and Jacob le Maire (1585-1616) in search of "Terra Australis" and a route to the far East via the northeast passage. Their search for the mythical southern continent was unsuccessful. On the 29th of January 1616, however, Schouten and his crew became the first Europeans to round Cape Horn (the southernmost headland in Tierra del Fuego, Chile), which Schouten subsequently named after his hometown. By rounding the Tierra del Fuego, Schouten and le Maire proved its size to be relatively inconsequential, and thus not a part of the fabled southern continent. The voyage continued northwest until they reached Batavia, a presidency established by the Dutch East India Company in the present-day Indonesian archipelago. Their ship and goods were seized upon arrival, as the Dutch East India Company (Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie or VOC) believed that Schouten and le Maire's route violated the VOC's trade monopoly. Disgraced and stripped of their possessions, Schouten and le Maire were placed on a ship bound for the Netherlands; le Maire died only eight days into the journey. When Schouten arrived in the Netherlands alone, he petitioned the VOC to return his journals for publication. With the help of the cartographer and publisher Willem Janszoon Blaeu (1571-1638), Schouten's account of the voyage was made available to the public in 1618. Its popularity was striking, and it was quickly translated into French (as here), German, and Latin. Whether the work was wholly Schouten's was disputed in court by le Maire's relatives, but the suit was unable to halt publication. It was not until 1622 that le Maire's papers were released in full by the VOC and a more accurate and balanced account could be published. The Journal is therefore not only a pillar of Dutch travel literature, but a symbol of the battles fought for prestige amongst explorers of the XVIIc. Theodore "Ted" Benttinen (1948-2023) was an MIT-educated oceanographer and explorer who went to both poles on research missions. Benttinen amassed a formidable collection of books of exploration, particularly strong in Pacific voyages as well as in polar accounts. The present volume was lot 254 in the Sotheby's New York 9 December 2024 sale of his library. Alden & Landis 618/119; Sabin 77952; not in Landwehr. Catalogued by GR Murdock. …

Octavo (8" x 6 1/4") bound in vellum like material with hand lettering to spine. (Sabin 77961) Third Vlasblom edition of Schouten's diary. This account of Schouten's voyage was first printed in Dutch in 1617. All editions of great rarity. Willem Schouten, Dutch explorer whose 1615 16 expedition discovered a new route, the Drake Passage, around the southern tip of South America, connecting the Atlantic Ocean with the Pacific. The Dutch East India Company held a monopoly on all East Indies trade by ships routed through the Strait of Magellan when, in 1615, an Amsterdam merchant, Isaac Le Maire, mounted an expedition to find a new route to the Pacific. His son Jakob and veteran sea captain Schouten led the voyage that set sail in May 1615 with two ships the second piloted by Schouten s brother Jan. By December they reached the far southeastern coast of South America, where the smaller ship caught fire and had to be abandoned. Sailing south the next month, Schouten passed through the Le Maire Strait between Tierra Del Fuego and Estados (Staten) Island and sailed into the Pacific. He gave the southernmost tip of America the name Cape Horn (Dutch: Kaap Hoorn). This new route, now known as the Drake Passage, was longer but much simpler than the established passage through the Strait of Magellan. The expedition went on to discover new islands (later named the Schouten Islands) off the northwestern coast of New Guinea before reaching its destination, Batavia, Java (now Jakarta, Indonesia.), in October 1616. There the Dutch governor, aware that any new route might end the privileged position of the Dutch East India Company, refused to believe that Schouten had discovered a new route westward and confiscated his cargo. Schouten and Le Maire were charged with infringing on the company s monopoly and were sent home to Holland; Le Maire died along the way. Upon Schouten s return to the Netherlands, his (and Le Maire s) diaries, complete with maps, were published and proved valuable to subsequent explorers.
