Have we reached the limits of this planet's ability to provide for us? If so, what can we do about it?These vital questions are addressed by Jill Schneiderman in The Earth Around Us, a unique collection of thirty-one essays by a diverse array of today's foremost scientist-writers. Sharing an ability to communicate science in a clear and engaging fashion, the contributors explore Earth's history and processes--especially in relation to today's environmental issues--and show how we, as members of a global community, can help maintain a livable planet. The narratives in this collection are organized into seven parts that describe:- Earth's time and history and the place of people in it- Views of nature and the ethics behind our conduct on Earth- Resources for the twenty-first century, such as public lands, healthy forests and soils, clean ground and surface waters, and fluctuating coastlines- Ill-informed local manipulations of landscapes across the United States- Innovative solutions to environmental problems that arise from knowledge of the interactions between living things and the Earth's air, water, and soil- Natural and human-induced global scale perturbations to the earth system- Our responsibility to people and all other organisms that live on EarthNever before has such a widely experienced group of prominent earth scientists been brought together to help readers understand how earth systems function to produce our physical and biological environment. Driven by the belief that earth science is, and should be, an integral part of everyday life, The Earth Around Us empowers all of us to play a more educated and active part in the search for a sustainable future for people and other living things on our planet.

Añadir al carritoPaperback small folio, very good condition, sewn (lay-flat) binding, light crease top corner front cover, top edge lightly foxed (covers minimally), minor edgewear. 143 pp. This book consists of text and sheet music for six harpsichord suites known as the 'French Suites' composed by J. S. Bach (1685 - 1750) between 1722 and 1725 in the German city of Cothen (Kothen, Saxony), where he spent six productive and happy years as Capellmeister in the court of Prince Leopold, producing some of his best known works. The only copies of the French suites in Bach's own hand surviving today were found in a music notebook, possibly a gift to his wife Anna Magdalena on her birthday in 1722, shortly after their marriage. The present edition has been newly researched and edited by Judith Schneider. The holograph (the written manuscript by Bach) and all the associated descriptive manuscripts were carefully studied by the editor. (This copy: 1988 edition, lacking ISBN, same as 1996 edition with ISBN 0739014064.).

Añadir al carritoSoft cover. Condición: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Near Fine; see scans and description. Chicago: Educational Foundation for Nuclear Science,1976. The October, 1976 issue of The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, that being Volume 32, Number 8. The famous and historic Doomsday Clock - shown on each cover or title page since 1947, two years after the publication's inception - here shows the time to be nine minutes of midnight as of late 1976. Quarto, illustrated staple-bound wraps, 48 pp. Near Fine; original addressee label on front cover, tiny strip sot on rear cover, no other flaws. Even the inevitable page paper toning is almost nonexistent. Contents immaculate. A handsome example; see all scans. Established in 1945 by biophysicist Eugene Rabinowitch and physicist Hyman Goldsmith in response to a correctly-perceived demand for nuclear information at the time by the general public, The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists is without doubt the most historically significant non-technical publication on the subject of "'global security and public policy issues related to the dangers posed by nuclear and other weapons of mass destruction, climate change,[2] and emerging technologies and diseases". Hence, over the years, BAS has become a geopolitical instrument, rather than a nuclear watchdog alone. Feature articles in this vintage 1976 issue: Nuclear Sabotage - with five tables of incidents; Peaceful Explosions; Nuclear Energy Illusions & Realities; Nuclear Responsibility - by President Jimmy Carter; Numbers Game; B-1 Bomber - Still Flying or Defunded?; Congressional Buck-Passing; Public Policy for Solar Heating and Cooling; Britain and the Bomb (bbok). See scan of contents. Contributors include Bernard T. Feld; Jimmy Carter; Fred C. Iklé; F.A. Long; Michael Flood; Alan S. Hirschberg; Samuel H. Day, Jr.; Barry R. Schneider; Elizabeth Young. Very, very scarce as the original monthly softcover issue. Ships in a new, sturdy, protective box - not a bag. LPR31.

Grover, Frederick H. Morley, Walter L. Huber, Chester Versteeg Ilustrador. First Edition. San Francisco: Sierra Club, 1923. First Edition. Vol XI, No. 4, for 1923. This was published during a several-year time period when the Sierra Club did not stipulate the month of an issue, just the volume, the number, and the year - monthly designations for such an infrequent publication having always been somewhat unnecessary in any case. Original printed wrappers, 9 1/4" x 6 1/4", 115 pp. + numerous unpaginated photographic plates, features and ads, including a fold-out map (Grouse Meadows to Vidette Meadow) and a fold-out wide-angle photograph by W.H. Wright. Gray stapled wraps, rather than the usual medium brown. Very Good; circuit binding (yapp binding) was used, in which cover edges were intentionally extended out beyond page edges, but over time the extended part becomes pressed inward somewhat (see scan). Some damage at inside front hinge area, and some spine sunning and abrasion. A handsome copy. See scans. Binding sturdy, contents fine. See scan of contents page for the lineup of stellar club writers and their always engaging and adventurous topics. In addition to the graphics mentioned above, this issue is chock full of photographic plates by the club's best photographers, as well as others, including Robert L. Lipman, A.C. Lovekin, J.S. Hutchinson, James K. Moffitt, Ansel F. Hall, Frank A. Williamson, C.O. Schneider, W. Harris (an 1867 shot), Con L. Grover, Frederick H. Morley, Walter L. Huber, Chester Versteeg and several uncredited artists. SC2.
