Manchmal geht es auch um die Klärung von Begriffen: Was zum Beispiel bedeutet bei einer Laute die Bezeichnung ?7-chörig?? In meiner bisherigen Zeit als Lautenist habe ich über fünftausend Prospekte mit Abbildungen der Haupttypen der Lauten- und Gitarrenfamilie verteilt. Der Vorrat ging allmählich zur Neige und ich machte mir Gedanken über eine Nachfolgepublikation. Farbig sollte sie diesmal sein; mit vielen schönen Bildern, um die Pracht der Instrumente zur Geltung kommen zu lassen. Meine persönlichen Erlebnisse mit der Lautenwelt sollten einen lebendigen Zugang zum Thema ermöglichen. Deshalb ist die Wahl der Beispiele von meiner ?Lauten-Biographie? geprägt. Ein Buch sollte es werden, das man aufbewahrt und im Bücherregal auch wiederfindet. Es sollte für ein möglichst breites Publikum aus der ganzen Welt lesbar sein, deshalb wurde es zweisprachig angelegt. Damit Interessierte sich weiter ins Thema einarbeiten können, sind dort Anmerkungen zu finden, wo eine größere Differenzierung die Lesbarkeit des Haupttextes beeinträchtigt hätte. Unter den Literaturhinweisen auf S. 113 werden einige wichtige Grundlagenwerke angegeben, mit deren Hilfe man sich der Fachliteratur nähern kann. Im Mittelpunkt steht aber die Anstiftung zur Wertschätzung zweier der spektakulärsten Instrumentenfamilien: der Lauten und Gitarren. Der Zeitrahmen für die tiefergehende Betrachtung beginnt um 1500 und endet kurz nach 1800 und umfasst somit die Renaissance, das Barockzeitalter und die Klassik. Darüber hinaus heutiger Zeit beleuchtet. Wertschätzung entsteht dann, wenn die Sinne und der Verstand das Besondere, Wertvolle erfassen können. Dies bedingt eine Auseinandersetzung mit dem Gegenstand. Hierzu soll dieses Buch mit Bild und Text anstiften. Menziken, im Herbst 2006 Introduction People often ask me questions about my instruments: They may have an interest in their special shapes, questions concerning playing techniques and the stringing, or about their special notation, lute tablature. Sometimes there are also specific terms that need to be explained: For example what does it mean if a lute is called a ?7-course? instrument? In my life as a lutenist I have circulated more than 5,000 leaflets showing and explaining the main representatives of the lute and guitar families. I began running out of supplies, however, and so had to think about a follow-up publication. This time it should show the instruments in colour, and I envisaged how their splendour would come into their own in many beautiful illustrations. My personal experience in the world of lutes should provide for an easy access to the topic. Hence the choice of examples is influenced by my own ?lute biography? I imagined a book that is kept dearly and not disposed of in the lower ranks of the book shelf. It should appeal to a wide readership all over the world and was therefore planned as a bilingual publication. In order to enable those interested to get a deeper understanding of the topic, annotations have been added at those points in the text, where a greater differentiation would have resulted in making it less comprehensible. In addition, there is a short list of fundamental books on p. 113, that may help approaching more expert literature. Yet I wish to focus on the great appeal of these two most attractive families of musical instruments: lutes and guitars. The time frame for this survey starts ca 1500 and ends shortly after 1800, encompassing Renaissance, Baroque and the classical period. Moreover, aspects of lute playing today are also addressed. I am convinced that appreciation grows when sense and sensibility comprehend the eminent and the curious. Admittedly, this asks for a certain amount of occupation with the object; and to occupy oneself with the intricacies and virtues of the lute, is what this book, with its text and pictures is meant to encourage its reader to do.
