Sie folgte selbstbewußt einer modernen Auffassung von freiem Farbauftrag und reduzierter Formensprache und nimmt in einigen Bildern bereits Momente der Abstraktion vorweg. 1902 galt sie bereits als eine der wichtigsten Vertreterinnen einer Generation finnischer Künstlerinnen. In den folgenden knapp 50 Jahren selbst gewählter Isolation in finnischen Dörfern entwickelt Schjerfbeck einen eigenen expressiven Stil, der in seiner Strenge, Stille und Intensität tief beeindruckt und gleichzeitig voller Kraft und Sensibilität ist. Fern von Historismus und Nationalromantik schildert die Künstlerin das einfache Leben der Frauen und Kinder. In den Bildern tritt das szenische Umfeld hinter der von einer inneren Kraft getragenen Haltung der Figuren zurück. Schjerfbeck reduziert das Erzählerische zu einer höchst ausdrucksstarken Formensprache.
