Die Internationale Situationniste wurde im Juli 1957 in Cosio dArroscia (Italien) gegründet, dezidiert nicht als eine Künstlergruppe, auch wenn sie aus verschiedenen Szenen und Bewegungen der europäischen Kunst hervorging. Ihr Ha…uptmotiv war die radikale Modernisierung der politischen Aktion aus dem Geist der Avantgarde; sie wollte eine revolutionäre Front in der Kultur errichten, nicht um des künstlerischen Ausdrucks willen, sondern weil sie in der Figur des Künstlers den in seiner Wahrnehmung der Gegenwart überlegenen Revolutionär erblickte. Weitaus konsequenter als die klassischen Avantgarden seit dem Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts, aus denen sie gleichwohl Inspirationen bezogen, beschränkten sich die Situationisten nicht darauf, die Rolle des Autors und der Kunst in ihrer Funktionalität für eine als falsch empfundene Verfasstheit der Gesellschaft unter dem Diktat von Ökonomie und Politik zu problematisieren. Fünf Jahre nach ihrer Gründung verbannten sie alle jene aus ihren Reihen, die vom Künstlerdasein und seinem Markt nicht lassen wollten, und beendeten jede Diskussion über die Frage, wie eine Kunst zur Revolution beitragen könne, die gleichzeitig im kapitalistischen Verwertungszusammenhang Erfolg haben muss. So machten sie auf ihre Weise Ernst mit der Forderung, die Kunst solle im Leben aufgehen, eine Forderung, die die Moderne in nie nachlassender Dringlichkeit angetrieben hatte. Sie bereiteten in ihrem eigenen Tun der Kunst ein praktisches Ende durchaus im Bewusstsein von Hegels Passus der ihr innewohnenden Historizität oder Endlichkeit. Das machte sie im Rahmen der heroischen Epoche der Gegenwartskunst jedenfalls der Logik nach zur letzten Avantgarde. In der äußersten Konsequenz ihres Begriffs vom Künstler hörten ihre Mitglieder auf, sich als solche zu verstehen. Ihre Werkform konnte nach 1962 nur mehr die revolutionäre Aktion sein. Und wenn dem kulturellen Umfeld zuvor erklärt worden war, die Kunst könne nur noch darin bestehen, Situationen zu konstruieren, so banden die Situationisten die Verwirklichung dieser Praxis nun nur noch an eine einzige verbliebene Situation den Beginn der Revolution. Auf diesem Weg wurden sie zu wichtigen Anregern und Theoretikern der Revolte des Mai 1968. Im Zentrum des vorliegenden Projekts steht ein im Jahr 1961 gefasster Plan der beiden Mitgründer der Internationale Situationniste Guy Debord (19311994) und Asger Jorn (19141943). Für das von Jorn ins Leben gerufene Kunstmuseum in Silkeborg, heute Museum Jorn genannt, skizzierten sie den Aufbau einer Sammlung von Büchern, Manifesten und Dokumenten, die Bibliothèque situationniste de Silkeborg. Das Besondere an dieser Einrichtung war dabei die Tatsache, dass der Bestand, statt sich nur auf das eigene Schrifttum der Gruppen um Debord zu konzentrieren, vor allem auch die wesentlichen Gründungstexte und Manifeste all jener Organisationen aufzuführen gedachte, aus denen Mitglieder zu den Situationisten gestoßen waren. Dieses Feld umgreift sehr viele ja fast alle sich als revolutionär verstehenden künstlerischen Vereinigungen in der ersten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts, darunter die Dadaisten, den belgischen Surrealismus mit seiner jüngeren Fraktion, Surréalisme Révolutionnaire, die im Widerstand gegen die deutsche Okkupation in Dänemark aktiven Künstlerverbände Høst und Helhesten, die holländische Experimentele Groep mit ihrem Periodikum Reflex, dann den internationalen Zusammenschluss dieser Organisationsstrukturen zu CoBrA, des Weiteren das Movimento internazionale per una Bauhaus immaginista, die sich um Lucio Fontana (18991968) formierende Bewegung der Arte Nucleare und das Laboratorio Sperimentale. Selbst Spurenelemente des italienischen Futurismo berührten die Genese der Situationisten. Obgleich Debord ein detailliertes Exposé zur Anlage der Bibliothek anfertigte und viele, nicht leicht zu findende Dokumente nach Silkeborg schickte, wurde das Projekt dort nie ausgeführt.

In winter 2006, under the stewardship of philosopher Wolfgang Scheppe, a collective of students from the IUAV University in Venice fanned out to subject their city to a forensic structural mapping. Out of this fieldwork, conducted in the Situationist psychogeography tradition, there devel…oped a three-year urban project that produced an enormous archive comprising tens of thousands of photographs, case studies, movement profiles and statistic data. From this archive, Venice, sited as it is at the junction of three migration corridors, emerges as a classic instance of the increasingly globalized city in which a decimated inner-city population meets armies of tourists and a parallel economy supported by illegal immigrants. In a map that cleverly branches out into visual essays, written essays, data maps and interviews, the globalized territory of Venice is microscopically dissected and defined as an urban metaphor, the city becoming an "atlas of a global situation.".
