Von den umfangreichen Werken autobiographischer Allegorik Kaiser Maximilians, dem "Theuerdank" und dem "Weißkunig" zu deren Illustrierung eine Anzahl von Künstlern herangezogen wurden, kann die Ausstellung a…us technischen Gründen nur wenige Beispiele bieten. Es sind vier Holzschnitte aus dem "Weisskunig" (Nr. 29-30) von den insgesamt 120, die der Stuttgarter Galerieverein aus der Sammlung Kade besitzt. Sie werden ergänzt durch einen Holzschnitt aus dem "Theuerdank" von Leonhard Beck, der der Tübinger Stiftung entstammt (Nr 34). Alle lassen die vielfältigen Möglichkeiten der illustrativen Begleitung literarischer Texte durch eine gepflegte, wenn auch etwas schwerblütige Darstellung erkennen. Ebenso fallen nur Schlaglichter auf die große Kunst der Donauschule (Albrecht Altdorfer und Wolf Huber (Nr. 37-43), auf Hans Baidung (Nr. 31-33), Hans Burgk-mair d.Ä. (Nr. 29 u. 35), Hans Holbein d. J. (Nr 36) und die Kleinmeister, deren Genre- und Portraitdarstellung in schönen Stücken der Stuttgarter und Tübinger Stiftung vertreten sind, darunter auch als Unicum eine auf Pergament gedruckte Radierung des Hans Lautensack von 1554 aus der Tübinger Sammlung (Nr. 51). Höchst eindrucksvoll ist die Konfrontierung dieser altdeutschen, bewegungsträchtigen Graphik mit der großartigen, gesammelten Kunst der Italiener, vor allem Mantegnas. Von den sieben Mantegna selbst zugeschriebenen Stichen sind sechs in der Ausstellung vertreten. Neben höchst monumentalen religiösen Darstellungen wie dem auferstandenen Christus zwischen Andreas und Longinus (Nr. 52), die mit der Verehrung des heiligen Blutes in St. Andrea in Mantua zusammenhängt, sind es Motive antiker Mythologie (Nr. 54-57) Sie gehören, wie ein Täfelchen mit der Inschrift "Invidia" anzudeuten scheint (Nr. 54) zu einer Gruppe didaktisch-humanistischer Allegorien. Ihre von antiken Reliefs gespeiste Gestaltdramatik hat Dürer, wie zwei seiner Nachzeichnungen beweisen, den ersten und wohl tiefsten Eindruck italienischer Kunst vermittelt, der sich noch lange ausgewirkt hat. Der dritte Bereich der Ausstellung, die niederländische Graphik, brilliert in den beiden großen Namen Lucas von Leyden und Rembrandt in eigener hoher Souveränität. Lucas von Leyden, ein Wunder- und Sorgenkind der kunsthistorischen Forschung, vertritt die Dürerzeit in den Niederlanden. Das Geburtsdatum, das Karel van Mander von ihm überliefert hat (1494) würde bedeuten, daß er schon mit 14 Jahren (1408) eine ganze Reihe von Kupferstichen von unglaublicher technischer und künstlerischer Meisterschaft geschaffen hätte. Nur ein Jahr später ist die sog. runde Passion datiert, eine Folge von Rundschreiben mit einer von eigener Platte gedruckten Ornamentumrahmung, die im formalen Motiv mit der Glasmalerei zusammenhängt (Nr. 60). Gegenüber den Deutschen und den Italienern fasziniert der eigene niederländische Klang: die Gelassenheit der Schilderung, der zarte Atem der Tonwerte, die Poesie aus der Sache selbst. Einen frühen Höhepunkt bedeutet das Einzelblatt "Das Milchmädchen" (Nr 61), eine "Inkunabel der Genremalerei", und die vom Geist der Legende wahrhaft beschwingte Josephsgeschichte, von der die Ausstellung ein hervorragendes Blatt zeigen kann (Nr. 62). Von den kostbaren Blättern Rembrandts aus der Sammlung Kade sind nur verhältnismäßig wenige nach Stuttgart und damit in die Ausstellung gekommen, darunter auch Vorzugsdrucke auf China- oder Japanpapier, wie die Kreuzabnahme bei Fackelbeleuchtung (Nr. 71) oder das Portrait des Amsterdamer Goldschmieds Jan Lutmä d. Ä. (Nr. 73). In ihnen rundet sich das Bild der Ausstellung insofern ab, als sie die höchsten Möglichkeiten des Graphischen überhaupt erkennen lassen: Hell und Dunkel als Extrakt des Daseienden, in dem das Rätselvolle im Schlichten, das Vergängliche im Unvergänglichen aufgehoben erscheint.
