Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: new. Hardcover. Haring as activist and egalitarian: a fresh, accessible and dynamic look at one of New Yorks most exhilarating artistsPublished with The Broad.Lavishly illustrated with essays and reflections by cultural leaders, Keith Haring: Art Is for Everybody surveys Harings dynamic art practice from 1978 to 1990, shining a bright light on the iconic and beloved artist known for his fluid, uniform lines, intricate compositions and repeating imagery such as the barking dog and radiant baby. Forty years after he came to prominence, Harings art continues to garner worldwide recognition, breaking down barriers and spreading joy, while taking on complex issues that remain crucial today, from environmentalism, capitalism and the proliferation of new technologies to religion, sexuality and race.Titled after a quote from Harings journals, Art Is for Everybody centers on the artists activism, the emphasis he placed on community and his egalitarian approach to art and life. The volume is organized chronologically and thematically, emphasizing Harings work made with publics in mind such as the subway drawings and murals, his collaborative practice and his unflinching belief that art is essential in making a better world.Keith Haring was born in Reading, Pennsylvania, in 1958 and arrived in New York from Pittsburgh in 1978, befriending artists including Kenny Scharf and Jean-Michel Basquiat. During the 1980s, Haring achieved international recognition and participated in numerous group and solo exhibitions. After being diagnosed with HIV in 1988, he focused his activism on the AIDS crisis. Less than two years later, Haring died of an AIDS-related illness. Añadir al carritoGyorody, Andrea. JOSEPH BEUYS: In Defense of Nature. 128 pages, including 56 color and 14 b&w plates. 4to, cloth. New York, DelMonico Books, 2024. Grounded in The Broad's collection of multiples by Joseph Beuys (1921-86), In Defense of Nature centers the German artist's commitment to environmental justice. The project traces Beuys' long history of activism, from founding alternative organizations such as the Organization for Direct Democracy to his involvement in Germany's Green Party. These efforts culminated in Beuys' last major project, 7,000 Oaks, which involved planting 7,000 trees accompanied by stones throughout the city of Kassel, Germany, from 1982 to 1987. Beuys' concept inspired Social Forest: Oaks of Tovaangar, a reforestation project in Los Angeles inaugurated as part of the PST ART initiative. With programs that address overlapping issues of environmental justice, reconciliation, and restoration, Social Forest highlights the continued impact of 7,000 Oaks and brings new meaning to Beuys' legacy four decades later, in a vastly different landscape that equally demands repair.

Assembling the voices of cultural leaders and curators, this book shares their insights on some of The Broad collection's most celebrated artists and worksPublished with The Broad. For decades, art patrons and philanthropists Eli and Edythe Broad have sought to foster public appreciation of postwar and contemporary art. Before founding The Broad museum in Los Angeles, their collection was made accessible by loaning artworks to institutions around the world through The Broad Art Foundation. Since 1984, more than 8,600 loans from The Broad collection have been made to over 500 museums and galleries. In 2015, The Broad collection found a permanent home when The Broad museum opened on Grand Avenue in downtown Los Angeles in a now iconic building designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro. The Broad's permanent collection boasts works from artists such as John Baldessari, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Jeff Koons, Damien Hirst, Barbara Kruger, Roy Lichtenstein, Julie Mehretu, Cindy Sherman and Andy Warhol, among others. In this book, writers and curators give an overview of the very best of The Broad's vast collection, including in-depth essays on five works that have come to define the experience of visiting the museum. This book enriches our understanding of The Broad's art and architecture while also provoking, inspiring and fostering appreciation of art of our time.
