Chase." Salmon P. Chase (1808-1873) was a politician and jurist who represented Ohio in the U.S. Senate from 1849 to 1855, and Governor until 1860. He ran for president in 1860, losing the nomination to Abraham Lincoln. In 1861, Abraham Lincoln appointed him Secretary of the Treasury, then Chief Justice of the United States (1864). As Chief Justice, he presided over major Reconstruction-era questions, including the Senate impeachment trial of Andrew Johnson. Signed.
