Condición: as new. Manchester : Manchester University Press, 2013. Paperback. xiii,330 pp. - When French theory went global in the late twentieth century its visual wing was understandably built on the work of its best-known thinkers, notably Foucault, Derrida, Barthes and Deleuze. However these names merely scratch the surface…of a vibrant and innovative body of theory that has been produced in France over the last six decades. As well as a substantial interview with Sorbonne professor Bernard Vouilloux, this volume focuses on a range of theorists who usually sit under the academic radar, especially when outside of France: Arasse, Buci-Glucksmann, Damisch, Debray, Didi-Huberman, Heinich, Marin, Schefer and Stiegler. Also discussed is the important work on the visual by Baudrillard, Merleau-Ponty, Metz and Nancy. All of these thinkers are given introductory and exploratory treatment here, and are allowed to talk between themselves. By looking at a wider set of theories and theorists relating to the visual, the debates are able to cross-fertilize, with the chapters divided into five major areas: phenomenology and beyond; new art histories and genealogies; semiotics and methodologies; memory and the body; and the digital era. This volume brings together international scholars working within Visual Culture and Art History, to look in detail at a range of issues in French contemporary visual theory. The chapters cover the main media of visual culture: fine art, cinema, museology, photography, as well as the key philosophical coordinates of modern times - phenomenology, structuralism and semiology, post-structuralism, psychoanalysis, sociology, aesthetics and Marxism. Throughout, the volume offers in-depth accounts of keywords, broad critical and historical contexts, and close attention to the language of visual theory. - Condition : as new copy. ISBN 9780719081309. Keywords : CULTURAL STUDIES, philosophy.

Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. "Real with Jah" is a book of poetry that deals honestly and frankly with Rastafari, faith, character, and modern issues. It starts out urging meaningful connection with God. That theme runs throughout the book. While encouraging faith, it also warns about falling into the world of sin, or be…ing led by the world into faithlessness. Faith requires commitment as well as strength. The Rasta man in particular is urged to be a leader, as his values (if upheld properly) can redeem the world. "Real with Jah" points to a progressive breakdown in social existence as the world relegates itself to artificial intelligence and online activity. Its poetry reveals a troubling atmosphere in light of current leadership, the abandonment of civility and civil discourse, the threats to civil rights, and the rise of hate language and activity. While on the one hand "Real with Jah" points out these problems, it on the other hand demands or hints at personal responsibility in rectifying these issues. The book provides insight into the status quo. It points a finger, not in an effort to merely accuse, but more so in an effort to effect change. Where guilt is laden, the guilty must take action to rectify a problem they've caused. Where forgiveness is warranted, the offended must forgive. "Real with Jah" provides avenues for both processes, which can only lead to real human progress. A person having the right attitude and mindset is central to this book's message. It urges him or her to focus on personal development spiritually, physically, and mentally. It beckons him to assess the world and make a meaningful contribution. It implores him to truly love. What one gains from reading this book and heeding its call are completion as a human being, and an exemplary character. This item is printed on demand. Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. "Stick with Jah" comes with ideas central to Nigel Daring's works: the importance of spirituality; the value of personal dignity; the resilience needed to rise from depravity; the worth of morality; the necessity of unity; the prioritization of humanity; the call for peace and stability. The… book addresses these issues through powerful poetry. From the first line in the first poem "Stick with Jah" (also the book's name), Mr. Daring states his most cherished message: "Stick with Jah through thick and thin". It's this idea that operates at the core of all messages and advice relayed in this work. Fundamentally, it's Jesus' message to seek God first and all things shall be added. The second poem in the book recognizes money as crucial to modern survival. But it simultaneously warns of its deleterious potential. The poem cautions us within advice rendered by Emperor Haile Selassie I. "The Power of Love" has a similar notion resonate in its messaging. It declares "materials and money don't give real power". Love is a higher power that's worth submitting to. This book has an idea like this repeated in various poems: we shouldn't allow ourselves to be ruled by our baser instincts. Rather we should value our higher self and submit to the yearnings thereof. There's ever a consciousness in "Stick with Jah" the book about the world we live in. It's one that it impresses upon the reader to be aware of and beware of. The poetry in this book often calls for personal as well as collective resistance. From these struggles, survival and progress can be had individually and communally. What some poems in this book also focus on is the importance of looking out for our fellow man. Unlike current notions of success, Nigel Daring views it as a collective enterprise. It's not an individual rise devoid of concern for others. Humanity is important to one's personal definition, but it's additionally essential to society's stability and survival. "Stick with Jah" wholly embraces and encourages it. It's a book that provides advice and insight all can appreciate. This item is printed on demand. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Paperback. Condición: New. Psychopathologies of the Living makes the work of the French psychoanalyst Pierre Fédida (1934-2002) available in English for the first time.Patrick ffrench and Nigel Saint present key essays selected from Fédida's extensive oeuvre. The book directs attention to two salient dimensions of Fédida's writi…ng: his attention to the pathologies of the body, considered as both a psychic and somatic entity, and his insistence on the relevance of psychoanalytic thought to the sciences of life. The chapters included in this collection detail Fédida's creative use of aesthetic sources in his psychoanalytic work, his distinctive and creative manipulation and revision of central psychoanalytic concepts and his precise attention to the texts of Freud, Ferenczi and Winnicott, among others. This selection of Fédida's essays also shows his avoidance of thematisation or explicit theorisation; for Fédida the theory of psychoanalysis must arise out of the specific interplay of language and the 'space of the session'.Psychopathologies of the Living will be of great interest to psychoanalysts in practice and in training and to academics and scholars of philosophy, aesthetics and literary studies.
