It marks an important transition in his life: In 1620, Vondel was still a member of the Anabaptist community. The focus on biblical heroes from the Old Testament aligns with the piety of that group. This copy contains the complete iconographic cycle of the "Heroes of God," namely 38 engravings. Many later reprints or incompletely bound copies miss precisely these last six prints (33 to 38). The connection with the text: Since Vondel wrote a poem for each print, this means that the complete series of 38 poems by Vondel is also included in the book. All capitals in the four parts of the book are hand-colored. The four parts were all printed in 1620 by the same publisher. An exceptionally well-preserved copy. First state of the 12 engravings composing this rare Passion.Superb suite engraved by Jan Sadeler (1550-1600) after Marcus Geeraerts the Elder (1530-1590) in oval medallions, in which the characters, with an extreme delicacy of execution, are included in an abundant grotesque setting.They…were executed by Queen Elisabeth of England's painter, Marcus Geeraerts the Elder, born in Bruges around 1530.Painter and engraver, he studied with his father, Egbert Gérards, in the Bruges' guild in 1558, then with Martin de Vos. In 1571, he was Queen Elisabeth of England's painter.The 12 plates depict the Last Supper, the Prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane, the Arrest of Christ, Christ taken by the soldiers, Christ in front of Pilate, Christ insulted by the soldiers, the bearing of the Cross, Christ undressed by the soldiers, the Crucifixion, the Deposition of Christ and the burial of Christ, the Harrowing of Hell, the Resurrection.Among the 4 copies that we could locate in public collections, those preserved in the National Gallery of Art of Washington, in the Rijksmuseum of Amsterdam and in the central Library of Zurich enclose a title-page and 13 plates (the extra one depicts the Flagellation of Christ) whereas the one in the British Museum encloses 12 plates. Legatura coeva in piena pergamena con titolo ms. al ds. Esemplare in eccellente stato di conservazione. Lo Speculum Principum , qui rilegato come seconda serie di tavole, può considerarsi una piccola rassegna allegorica sulle più nobili attività umane che contraddistinguevano la vita dei Principi nelle corti cinquecentesche, sia… in campo politico e militare, come l arte di combinare matrimoni o di muovere guerra, sia in quello dell ozio, dalla caccia allo studio delle lettere che lo Stradano potrebbe in parte aver realizzato ispirandosi al libro del Cortegiano di Baldassar Castiglione (Baroni Vannucci A., Jan Van Der Straet detto Giovanni Stradano. , p. 408). Rarissime inoltre risultano le due altre suites relative agli Apostoli ed agli Imperatori romani, di cui non abbiamo trovato riferimenti in ICCU. Nel complesso, splendido insieme di incisioni - per la maggior parte attribuibili alla famiglia Sadeler - stampate tra la fine del XVI e gli inizi del XVII Secolo. Folio (cm. 35,5), Frontespizio inciso e 5 tavole allegoriche relative alle Armi, alle Nozze, alle Lettere, alla Caccia e alla Pietà, ciascuna con titoli e didascalie in lingua latina. Lo Speculum è rilegato con altre 3 raccolte di incisioni: 1) 13 tavole stampate da Aegidius e Marco Sadeler a Praga nel 1597 raffiguranti Gesù Cristo ed i dodici apostoli: S. Pietro, S. Andrea, S. Giovanni, S. Giacomo maggiore, S. Tommaso, S. Giacomo minore, S. Bartolomeo, S. Giuda, S. Simeone, S. Matteo e S. Mattia. Precede le tavole un frontespizio anch esso inciso ( Illustrissimo et Reverendissimo Principi ac Domino Sbigneo Berka Archiepiscopo Pragensi. ). 2) 12 tavole di Autore anonimo (ma attribuibili ad un membro della famiglia Sadeler) raffiguranti gli Imperatori romani a cavallo (Giulio Cesare, Augusto, Tiberio, Caligola, Claudio, Nerone, Galba, Ottone, Vitellio, Vespasiano, Tito, Domiziano) stampate a Siena da Filippo Succhielli senza indicazione di data (ma fine 500 inizi 600); 3) quattro altre incisioni di Autori diversi ( San Girolamo tentato di Giovanni Battista Pasqualini da un disegno del Guercino, datata 1625; un incisione di David Custos con didascalia in latino tratta dall opera Icones operum Misericordiae quae ad Corpus pertinent stampata da Marco Sadeler; Santa Maria Maddalena portata in cielo dagli angeli di Raffaello Schiaminossi da un dipinto di Luca Cambiaso, stampata a Roma nel 1612; un incisione - rifilata al margine superiore - di Justus Sadeler da un dipinto di Giuseppe Porta detto il Salviati).

Joris Hoefnagel Engraved portrait. The son of a diamond dealer, Joris Hoefnagel (1542-1601) received a thorough education in the arts in his early years, and as a young man trained as an artist in Antwerp. During the following decades he travelled around Europe meeting many notable figures including Abraham Ortelius, with whom h…e travelled through Germany and Italy. Hoefnagel was a very versatile artist and is recognised as one of the last great manuscript illuminators. He also made a major contribution to the development of topographical drawing, with his drawings serving as models for the later works of Ortelius, Hogenberg and Braun. Hoefnagel's portrait, a bust in three-quarter perspective, was engraved by Jan Sadeler, of the eminent family of Flemish engravers, in 1592. In 1610, Hendrik Hondius I expanded Sadeler's portrait to show Hoefnagel's entire upper-body, his right hand on his hip and his left holding a cameo. Hondius's portrait was copied in reverse by Scottish engraver Alexander Bannerman during the mid-eighteenth century for Horace Walpole's 'Anecdotes of Painters', a multi-volume based on the extensive notes of the successful publisher, George Vertue.

Blattgröße 32,5 x 24,8 cm ; Plattenmaß ca. 25,5 x 21,5 cm. Die Tafeln zeigen biblische Szenen zu König David und den Propheten Israels.Die Vorlagen wurden von Maerten d…e Vos (15321603) gezeichnet, gestochen und herausgegeben von Jan I. Sadeler. Die Serie ist undatiert und es gibt keine Titelei. Das vordere Vorsatzpapier ist im Gelenk zerbrochen. Die Tafeln teils etwas finger- und auch sonst fleckig. Insgesamt jedoch von schöner Erhaltung. Latein 900g 33 x 25,5 cm, Querformat, Halbledereinband.

Raccolta di 16 tavole incise a bulino di scuola fiamminga (numerate da 1 a 16), legate a filza, su fogli ad ampi margini cm 44 x 32 (battuta cm 25,5 x 21,5 circa). Gora presente su tutte le tavole. Le tavole raffigurano scene bibliche sul tema della Pazienza del Re Davide e dei Profeti d'Israele accompagnate da due distici testu…ali che descrivono la raffigurazione e da una citazione biblica. Sono disegnate daÂMaerten de Vos (1532-1603), incise e pubblicate daÂJan I Sadeler, zio di Aegidius Sadeler. La serie non e' datata. "Dorothy Limouze considers that it was published in Munich during the early period when both Sadelers were active at the Wittelsbach court around 1588. Copies of the series were produced as early as 1597 in Frankfurt, with text by Benedictus Arias Montanus. The prints in the Patientia series each include two couplets referring to the story depicted, accompanied by Bible quotations. The series 'Patientiae Davidis Regis et prophetae' is characteristic of the Counter Reformation of the late sixteenth century fot the themes of patient suffering (patientia)" (Thea Vignau-Wilberg, "Music for a while", 1999, p. 137). Nel Catalogo della libreria antiquaria Ludwig Rosenthal (Monaco, 1871) e' citata questa raccolta di tavole, datata 1586, definita di una rarita' straordinaria: "Patientiae Davidis regis et prophetae in Israel Joa. Sadeler auctor et excu. (1586), 16 fg. precieuses. D'une rarete' extraordinaire! Ex d'une conservation parfaite!". ITA.
