Lo Speculum Principum , qui rilegato come seconda serie di tavole, può considerarsi una piccola rassegna allegorica sulle più nobili attività umane che contraddistinguevano la vita dei Principi nelle corti cinquecentesche, sia in campo politico e militare, come l arte di combinare matrimoni o di muovere guerra, sia in quello dell ozio, dalla caccia allo studio delle lettere che lo Stradano potrebbe in parte aver realizzato ispirandosi al libro del Cortegiano di Baldassar Castiglione (Baroni Vannucci A., Jan Van Der Straet detto Giovanni Stradano. , p. 408). Rarissime inoltre risultano le due altre suites relative agli Apostoli ed agli Imperatori romani, di cui non abbiamo trovato riferimenti in ICCU. Nel complesso, splendido insieme di incisioni - per la maggior parte attribuibili alla famiglia Sadeler - stampate tra la fine del XVI e gli inizi del XVII Secolo. Folio (cm. 35,5), Frontespizio inciso e 5 tavole allegoriche relative alle Armi, alle Nozze, alle Lettere, alla Caccia e alla Pietà, ciascuna con titoli e didascalie in lingua latina. Joris Hoefnagel Engraved portrait. The son of a diamond dealer, Joris Hoefnagel (1542-1601) received a thorough education in the arts in his early years, and as a young man trained as an artist in Antwerp. During the following decades he travelled around Europe meeting many notable figures including Abraham Ortelius, with whom he travelled through Germany and Italy. Hoefnagel was a very versatile artist and is recognised as one of the last great manuscript illuminators. He also made a major contribution to the development of topographical drawing, with his drawings serving as models for the later works of Ortelius, Hogenberg and Braun. Hoefnagel's portrait, a bust in three-quarter perspective, was engraved by Jan Sadeler, of the eminent family of Flemish engravers, in 1592. In 1610, Hendrik Hondius I expanded Sadeler's portrait to show Hoefnagel's entire upper-body, his right hand on his hip and his left holding a cameo. Hondius's portrait was copied in reverse by Scottish engraver Alexander Bannerman during the mid-eighteenth century for Horace Walpole's 'Anecdotes of Painters', a multi-volume based on the extensive notes of the successful publisher, George Vertue.

"Dorothy Limouze considers that it was published in Munich during the early period when both Sadelers were active at the Wittelsbach court around 1588. Copies of the series were produced as early as 1597 in Frankfurt, with text by Benedictus Arias Montanus. The prints in the Patientia series each include two couplets referring to the story depicted, accompanied by Bible quotations. The series 'Patientiae Davidis Regis et prophetae' is characteristic of the Counter Reformation of the late sixteenth century fot the themes of patient suffering (patientia)" (Thea Vignau-Wilberg, "Music for a while", 1999, p. 137).
